Hi, Everyone.

Here is my most recent score from Ebay. Let me know what you think:

If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but I think it may be just shy of FB.

    this one falls short.....

the middle bands must have full seperation...

  • Here's a better shot of the middle bands. It definitely looks like they're not separated. Damn....image

I think I also see some slight rub on the Obverse...

  • So what would you grade it?

    Where's the rub?

For what I paid, I'm still happy with it, but I think I'll go for a slabbed one next time. It's too hard to judge condition with Ebay pictures for something like this.

You should start going after stuff like this.

    Right here. Cheap Slabbed Merc

No, it is not my coin.

Now I'm confused. You wanted a FB merc and you are bidding on another one of those other *defective* non-FB mercs? image

cool coin. Be very carefull buying raw coins. A lot of times there are hairline scratched not seen in photos that make the coins worth less than you can pay. I have seen some raw coins bid up much much to much. Take Ken's advice. Look for cheap PCGS slab. There are some real bargin coins from the 1940's.

The important thing to me at this point is that I know WTF I'm getting! image At least if it's slabbed I know someone else looked at it and found it worthy, even if it's not full bands. (Plus, it'll give me something to compare against in the future.)

First of all are YOU happy with the coin? If so, who cares if it is FB or not?

For that matter, even if it was FB you still have striking problems over at 2 to 3 o'clock on the reverse. So if you had paid FB money for the coin you are paying too much for this one even if it was FB, IMO.

Either way, it is more important whether YOU like the coin....

I think he needs to get a slabbed Merc in his hands to see the difference. Then venture into the Raw coins. Full Bands on this date does not mean a whole bunch at this level.

Bet ya get outbid. Your bid is not even one bid increment higher than the underbidder. If he is on the ball he will outbid you and win the coin cheaply. If not good for you.....image

Actually, I can't complain about the coin. It's damn nice, even if though isn't FB. And for what I paid for it, it's hard to argue I got screwed badly. I just think the seller (who actually seems like a nice enough guy -- very attentive in e-mails and communicative) didn't look at the coin closely enough when he said "full bands". Maybe that's being too lenient, but it just doesn't look like he was intentionally dishonest.

Regardless of what the seller told you it comes down to what you paid. I don't think (although I'm not entirely sure) the prices for most of the late date Mercs have a small spread between FB and non-FB (there are exceptions like the 45-P however). In many cases even the spread between the mid-range MS grades aren't that much different. In the long run, as long as you LIKE the coin, it probably isn't going to matter much.
