Didn't PCGS once sponsor a young numismatists essay contest?

Whatever happened to it?

Don't know if you are referring to JohnZ as one of the "great people" but I believe he had a huge giveaway of gold for YN's and I believe it was for essays.

He's a great scumbag. The kids did everything and he disappeared like a fart in the wind.

I'm referring to a contest sponsored by PCGS. I seem to recall that it awarded a rather substantial scholarship.

I've never even heard of this dude. I wonder if he was before my time here? I am referring to Ksteelheader and TonedPeaceNut. They organized the contest and the great people of the forum donated the prizes.

The Professional Numismatists Guild, PNG, had a YN essay contest years ago in conjunction with the "pennyboard" giveaway. Mr. Berk organized it. I helped judge the winner.

Last I heard of the PCGS YN Essay contest was in 2003. Here's a link to a thread about it. Link I do not beleive they are doing it any longer though.

    Edit to add:

It's water under the bridge now, but yeah, that JohnZ thing was a nightmare. I got flamed a few times for asking questions about it on behalf of notlogical, because he was getting pretty discourage checking the mail everyday for 6 months and no prize after being repeatedly told "it's in the mail". My hats are off, and I will be eternally grateful, to the board members who took it upon themselves to make it right for the YN's. image

PCGS did last host one in 2003--I tied on first place, with a split $5000 prize ($2500).

The JohnZ fiasco did finally turn out ok--the generosity of the boards showed through... the $5 Indian has been in my album ever since image

  • That would be cool if they had a contest. I would definitely enter.
