eBay Sellers: If you had the ability to. . . would you?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,169 ✭✭✭✭✭
If eBay set it up so sellers could block bidders with zero feedback would you take advantage of this?

Buyers: Even with your established feedback, would you think less of a seller who blocked freshly registered/ zero feedback bidders?

I am fortunate that I have not ever had a problem with a zero feedback buyer. I do block anyone with a negative feedback score, but would not opt to block zero feedback buyers if the option was available. Everyone has to start somewhere.

It is set up that way.

But no, I personally would not block 0 feedback bidders. Everyone has to start somewhere. I have my account set to block -1 or more.

Added: Oops. I was wrong. It is not allowed to block 0 feedback bidders. Sorry.

I wouldn't block any (0)'s - I've gotten plenty of good buyers from first time bidders.

What's the worst they can do to you? Not pay and cost you listing fee's. More often than not they have the spirit of win at all costs!

  • I blocked any and all bidders with negative ratings and will verify Zero ranked bidders with a friendly inquiry email. The suspicious ones are those that have been on ebay for more than a year with Zero feedback, zero purchases....99% of the time they dont reply to a message or email, so they got blocked or their bid gets cancelled.

Zero Feedback winners are cool people. I think I have had two that left Feedback before the item even shipped. One did it before I left him Feedback.

Zero folks have to prove to me that they are duds before I block them. Sellers that block them have a super duper case of paranoia in my opinion.

  • here's one i long for.... a feature where when the auction is over seller can decide whether they want to complete transaction
with the winner or bump it down do the underbidder.
an unresponsive private feedback winner, or someone who leaves negatives like candy, with the click of the mouse could be relinquished of top bid and move it to next highest bidder.

No, I would not block zero feedback users. I would give new people to eBay the benefit of the doubt.

I totally agree. I would also like to see how many people are watching other peoples auctions.

I don't see here the ability to block zero feedback bidders. It allows other options. Many, in fact. Just not that one.
  • I wouldn't block 0 feedback bidders, for the same reasons already stated.

    It looks like you can only block a (-1) A (-2) OR A (-3)......

No, I would not as when I first started on Ebay, I got blocked for a coin that I wanted to bid on.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I agree with all of you. I've yet to have a problem with a zero feedback bidder/winner. As stated, they're usually quick to pay so as to build up their ratings.

I ask though as I wouldn't mind placing a temporary block on my account. I received a friendly email from a customer who informed me someone I had blocked about two weeks ago (and, subsequently blocked their second eBay handle when I did a little research) has quickly listed a third handle so as to bid.

I don't know what this person's intent was once he won a couple of my auctions under this new handle but I'd rather just avoid the hassle. I blocked the third handle but don't want to have to look over my shoulder for another. I'm also aware eBay has in play a system of reporting those who would participate in that activity- placing bids with an account who also has a blocked account, but why mess around with the aftermath?

If I could simply place a temporary block I'd be cool for just a few weeks and then I'd lift it again, but no. eBay doesn't allow this. Not complaining, just kind of surprised.

The only time I would notice is if somebody retracted a bid on one of my auctions. That's a blockable offense image

    Why 30 retractions?

No. Why would you think I or anyone should? In the five years of doing eBay I've got a list of less than a dozen people on my blocked list. NO one is a board member here. Most in fact are names dropped in other threads as a warning to all.

Side note: why so many bid retractions though?

If you bid....No. I would not even look at your feedback.

If you retracted the bid....Instantly. Now you have thrown up the Red Flag.

You've either made an enemie out of one of the nice people on eBay, or he really, really, really likes your coins.

Why did you block him originally?

  • I got into a area of collectables I knew nothing about (indian artifacts).
Made massive bids on a sellers items.
Then i was bombarded with pm's that this seller was selling modern-made as old to deceive newbies like me.
He had 100 % feedback and multiple user Ids.
    Happened to me several times.
I no longer collect indian artifacts.

Slow pay and wouldn't respond to emails. I hated to do it to as he was a pretty good customer for awhile.
  • Just to clarify;
I never block zero feedback bidders just because they are at Zero, everyone does have to start somewhere. I just verify them when they seem suspicious. I had a great experience with a zero feedback a few months back... he was bidding on $3000 worth of stuff on 4 different auctions... and he was a newbie, so I emailed him and politely asked him to verify his contact info email, etc. He complied, the transaction went great and as of today he is ranked 100% feedback with 75 positives or so.

I do feel its prudent to block bidders with NEGATIVE rankings and those with excessive unpaid item strikes.

I don't think you have to worry about any revenge feedback then.

It seems like they guy does like your coins. Hopefully, his new handle pays a lot faster.

    Yeah, probably.

I did receive a pretty nasty email though when I wrote to explain he was blocked and why (slow pay on a consignment coin meant I was out of pocket until he did finally pay).
I think most sellers would simply block without an explanation email so I was taken aback when he responded the way he did afterward.

No. I agree that zero feedback bidders are usually cool people who want to build a rep by doing it right. I've had some great transactions with newbs.

As a buyer, I wish you could block sellers. Meaning I want to block sellers to prevent myself from bidding on their auctions. I've had bought from scumbags before, and read about many more on these forums, but I can't remember all of them or their ebay handles.

THIRTY bid retractions??? I might have 2 in 8 years.

Yes you'd be blocked on the retractions alone.

Goose, read his explanation (a few post down from what you read). It's sound logic as to why.

  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
ok.. makes sense but you or I would never know that looking at him bidding on our items. if I saw that, I'd be blocking.

Can't argue that point...i probably would block me also.

I have bid on and won coins from members here that don't know i am a member here.
I have a different ebay id.

so far i have never been blocked from anything that i have bid on.
"Everyday above ground is a good day"

  • everybody has to start somewhere. at one point you too had zero feedback.image
  • ive been on ebay since 2003 or 2004 with only a rating of 2, partly b/c sellers dont leave feedback. cant do much about that myself, plus i dont just buy a bunch of stuff. i bid on what i want, at the price i want to pay. if i get outbid, so be it, but i have turned away from some that mention low feedback users needing to contact people before bidding.
  • imageIf you had zero feedback and got blocked from a seller ,And if you could find someone who did not block zero feedback bidders, would you EVER go back to the seller who blocked you? I belive everyone starts out with zero, they have to start somewhere . So no I would not do that ,I also have had some good luck with first time buyers ,They have also been great repeat buyers that started at zero .

I would not. But I'm the kind of seller who respects his buyers and is willing to take the time to nursemaid them through the eBay process. All sellers should endeavor to make newbie's experiences pleasant, so they will stick around eBay for the long term. More buyers on eBay means more bidders for my auctions, and therefore higher final values.

Also, I love the thrill of "deflowering" their feedback.

The only people I've blocked are sellers who have misrepresented their coins. Bidders, bring em on! Never had a problem with a buyer, a few problems with sellers. 100% positive feedback(so far) out of around 500 trades and when I sell I leave feedback when paid.
