Is the "Birth Mark" die 1967 SMS Kennedys Worth a Premium?

I've been internally debating this for a couple of years now. I know the coin is somewhat scarce- maybe even proving to be rare. I recently sold this one on eBay without stating it was a birth mark die coin.
I have seen these turn up on Teletrade but they generally receive very little premium if any at all.
I personally think it's an exciting coin and one that with a little promotion could take off.
What do you think? I have letters drafted to NGC and ANACS with a CC to PCGS ready to go out asking what their position is with this variety and if, in the future, they may consider holdering coins with the variety on the label.
I think the next couple of years will be temendous ones for Kennedy halves (especially if the series is no longer minted) and possibly this die variety could be at the forefront of the adventure!

That kinda has a little BS....errr.... I mean SB feel to it....
Also, If PCGS added it to the "Proof Silver Short Set", interest certainly would pick up!

That is why I bought your coin. Russ and I have been hoarding them and trying to keep it hush-hush.
So now the cat is out of the bag and everyone will be trying to buy one. (I wonder what that will mean for future prices?)
This variety is mentioned in Rick Tomaska's book on Modern Proof Cameos (a photo is included) but not yet recognized elsewhere.

I find such marks to be distracting but not overly so. There is a very similar one on the '70-S Kennedy.
Kennedys are greatly underappreciated but the Ikes are likely to get a second wind before these heat up. It might be right before. If the half dollar is discontinued then all bets are off and they would get a lot of overdue attention.
It would not be wise to just throw money at these coins (or any coins) in the hope of making a big profit. All the kennedys exist in significant numbers and except for the matte proofs would require a huge influx of collectors to drive up the price of the typical mint state or proof coins. There are numerous varieties and gems as well as some special issues which are pretty tough. There are a few that are none too easy even in choice unc.
<< <i>Until it gets an FS# it's like a bugs bunny franklin. Slight premium, if any. >>
Cameonut: I'm glad it went to you. I think you'll agree the mark is stronger on the coin than the photos.
Marty: I think, with the proper promotion and recognition from the Services, this one could have legs- much more than the bugsbunny Franklins I'd think.
Possibly if the Services knew there was a ground swell of interest among enthusiasts they'de be more likely to step up.
I know that's how the 1972 Ike varieties finally got recognized (and, we know what happened to prices once PCGS and NGC did so!)- lots of mail and petitioning from collectors.
I think/hope it's on its way to proper status.

why do you hope that? and what is it's "proper status"?

All the evidence points to these SMS Kennedys being a true First Strike coin (unlike the "first strike" silver eagles that are all built on hype and shananigans).
It's a true minting variety and one, unlike other, lesser recognized varieties, is easily seen with the naked eye.
Couple that with the beauty of the coin and the absolute scarcity and it's a winner.
I also believe there are enough of them out there to make holdering these by PCGS and NGC and ANACS worth it. In other words there are enough to satisfy the bottom line as many that are already in holders would need to be sent back for the special designation. I dislike thinking of these coins as money makers, but we as collectors must also look out for the grading services, "what's-in-it-for-us?" agenda.
So, think about it:
It's a beautiful variety, one that is easily seen.
It is becoming known as scarce yet not so rare as to make locating them improbable.
It would enhance the already strong popularity of th is booming series in general.
It would also be exciting and groundbreaking news as collectors locate these in the back storerooms of dusty coin shops, in older 2X2 laced albums where most dealers would have absolutely no idea what a cherry variety this is.
Plus, the name is sexy: Birthmark Die
As Adam Corolla would ask, "What say you?".
I say yay!

<< <i>Why? It's a damaged coin... >>
I believe it's just a polishing mark. All of these I've seen are from a brand new die but this seems to apply
to cameos on the SMS's in general also. All of the "birth mark" coins are spectacular.
If this is such a damaged coin, then why don't you let me buy the one you just made across the street?

Sorry, Russ gave me $50 for it.

Cameonut- could you use more? I might have a couple of others I'd cut loose!
