i am at baltimore now the show for my kinds of coins is instant liquidity at monster prices!!!!!!!!

i was shocked at the offers i received .......it was beyond my wildest expectations

there are no good coins to be found on the floor in my type of stuff killer exceptionaL eye appeal that i likes yes there where a few exceptions but they where few AND far between and i am no market insider soi i am sure the monsters traded hands before the show opened or are saved for friends

i looked at the bowers and merena auctions and well there was absolutely nothing with few exceptions that i looked that that was exceptional high eye appeal killer coins

a couple of top insider dealers i know said that there was absolutelty little to nothing to buy

i myself did trade for a monster superb gem flyer at multiples of sheet as did not have any funds available.... i love to trade but i had to give a gem+++ monster toned killer twenty cent piece and a superb gem ++++ better date monster toned red and olive green barber dime that are totally freash and new to the marketplace especially so the barber dime all these three where pcgs

lets see got a killer eye appeal really nice for the grade ngc saint i did a trade but i had to give a really special liberty double eagle for and one other really nifty item........ so i have found i love to trade all ngc coinage

but with trading what usually happens is you keep trading till you got nothing less image

oh and many really go by the sheet pricesimage and they got every excuse in the book but then i asks them for a price and it is 2.5 times sheetimage and i will tell you this thAt many table holders at the show got more great/fantastic answers as to why i should kill myself or why my stuff is crapola and theirs is the holy grail then there are grains of sand in the ocean but i guess monster stuff talks and it was incredibly easy to do my trades

i guess i will die with this stuff.... i gave away too much and paid way WAY too much in the tradesimage

It sounds to me like the bourse must be filled with coins that are overgraded swill. Just what percentage of the coins on the floor fit your definition of "monster". I'll bet that percentage is a tiny fraction of 1%.

How are "ordinary" coins selling...if at all?

    All glory is fleeting.

well myuself i consider monsters to be anything from a choice proof matte finish indian eagle a monster gem toned twenty cent piece a choice vg flowing hair half dollar with full rims to a better vam variety in choice unc to prooflike any circ dove grey problem free great eye appeallingf pre 1915 type coins

and of course all of the above have to be great eye appeal +++ if not better

i would say on the floor 2% of what i saw was worthy

oh and also any choice proof type nicely toned or whiite again the key is eye appeal

so for me monster eye appeal is anything pre 1936 that is at least solid for the grade and killer eye appeal and this could even be for ag pre 1807 type coins also

the key is pre 1936 and killer eye appeal which presupposes great if not better for the grade and also with above average eye appeal or other extraspecial extraordinary qualities about the coin or whatever numismatic speciality is your pleasure

oh i might add to ALL OF THE ABOVE scarcity!!!!!!!!!!! must be scarce

i asked mark to get to a dealers table on thurs to look
at some pcgs graded half eagles. real nice dates.
    55S, 60S, 72P, etc...

    ALL GONE.

The only coins left that mark liked were priced to the sky,
except a lowly 1879S that he liked and I instantly bought
    for my collection.

i was shopping for a 2500 dollar coin and got a 250 dollar one :-)

    i am very happy.

Thanks for the report Michael. Sounds like you're having a blast.

Maybe if you are around Saturday I'll catch up with you.

It has seemed that way to me for quite while now, at least six months. Hard to find rarieties that don't have problems or are IMO overgraded in slabs. On slabs, have you noticed a lot more of the fringe TPG (other than the top 3 or 4) slabs on the bourse?

Agreed with the bigeng'd post. Michael. hope you stay around right here in these boards.

But we still would love you see what you have to sell before it happens! Even if it is only a show and tell on the bst boards. Makes the boards more interesting too.

As far as making fun of you, that is simply not acceptable. You have far more admirers than detractors.

Besides, I have not seen anyone make fun of you in a very long time.

I'm not a believer in the "instant liquidity" idea in coins unless you have circ wheat cents, common Morgans, or $20 generic saints for example. Monster type or dated material does not enjoy instant liquidity unless you undersell it. And that goes for anything you sell. When it flies out of your hands, you almost always undersold it. What remains are coins you over-estimated and missed something on. When priced at near market value even monsters take time to move. Possibly one exception is the rarified air where a Monsterman or Dr. Duckor operate behind the scenes. Only a fraction of 1% of dealers or top collectors have any exposure to the goings on in that type of trading.

Most non-dealers who own really top notch material usually undersell it unless they go the auction route....and there most give away at least 13% in commissions. Taken at random on a large bourse floor, 9 out of 10 dealers tabled would have no idea if they are looking at a monster example of a coin, a PQ one, or just a nice one. And even out of a group of 10 dealers who routinely deal in such material, maybe only 3 or 4 would make reasonable or strong offers (whether for cash flow, looking for rips only, don't know or trust you, etc.). In most cases they would not make offers and allow you to underprice or overprice your own coins. And if someone is amazed at an apparently "high offer" they have received for something, it's usually because they have not kept touch with the market or they have still under-estimated the coin.
Dealers don't usually take substantial risks. They pay what they perceive to be under the market to sell to collectors at FMV....unless they have undiscriminating buyers waiting in the wings to pounce on any "newps" sent to them.

The best classic coins are not enjoying any bourse time. They are sold via want lists or end up at auction. I would imagine any longer term holders of top notch classics (even their so-so coins) far exceed the quality seen on the bourse floor these days. It feels like some of the sleeping 19th century classics are about to have their day.
