Lincoln 1955/55 DDO toned

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,441 ✭✭✭✭✭
Trying out posting images of some coins I have had for a little bit.....

Finally got some pics of my 55/55 Lincoln from last year.
Anyone like it? I really like it. I sold a nice AU58 55/55 that I had to get this one image

Sorry for not cropping....the machine I am on right now doesn't have any photo software.....all shots are unedited and uncropped image

The first set of photos make the coin look more appealing to me: nicer array of colors and luster! Beautiful coin that would be the centerpiece of most collections.

    Thanks Barndog, I agree!

FYI that the first set of photos are my try at playing with lighting and an older camera having problems tonight (and again, NO adjustments for contract or anything...not even cropping image, yet....I will reload the software soon).

The 2nd set is what I saw with the coin when it was on its way to me....the seller? Mark (Coinguy1). That man has a great eye for coins! And, his pics are nice but don't do the coins justice! If anyone has a chance to buy from him, you won't regret it.

Great coin Bochiman. I think the 55 DDO is one of the best coins to include in a US coin collection, and you have a great example of oneimage
What does NGC this one grade?

That coin is so much nicer than many spotted coins in red holders. I'd take that one any day over most of them I have seen. You snagged a keeper.

    Thanks guys.

The color doesn't jump out until you tilt it just right in the light, but it is all there (again, there was no playing with any settings).

  • If it wasnt a 55/55 it would be graded MS64BN. They grade the keys too harshly, IMO. Nice coin!

I think you are right on the money DB. They don't want to ever get called to task on a big coin. Nothing like grading consistancy across the board.

    Nice coin!

You made one big mistake though in acquiring your new baby!

You should not have given up your first born AU-58 coin!! In a year or two you will be hunting down your first baby sparing no expense!

Oreville, you are more right than you know image
No sooner did I sell it to a local dealer (made ~$300 on the deal...not bad for holding it for a couple of months), then my WIFE chews me out for selling it!

And, get this, she isn't into coins so she has no idea of the costs, keys, rarities, etc. image

However, while I would like to own more than a few of these image, I am fine with selling the AU58 from the standpoint of: It was just brown...no toning. Nice for the grade though (It it one of those that, if you submit it enough, you WILL end up with a few AUs and a MS63 or MS62 in there).

I was thinking of crossing it to PCGS (this current one) but don't do direct submitting and am not planning on selling anytime soon (this is my boy's coin that I get to enjoy right now image ). I get a lot of pleasure from going to the safe deposit box, pulling it out, tilting it in the light, and enjoying it image

As for MS64....not sure. You can barely see it in my pics, but the shoulder has some hits on it. I have trouble seeing them with the naked eye though. They are quite visible in a blown up pic taken from macro mode though.

It is just such a pretty coin that I was happy to get a halfway decent photo on it last night. Thanks again for all the nice words on it, and I agree with IrishMike.....I really do enjoy it more than any RED version with a spot here or there.

She's a smart cookie.....I never told her what I initially paid for it (under $1400 from heritage...was one that they ebayed and it didn't sell, so after the auction, I made a deal with them) but I did make the mistake of telling her how long I had it and the profit in that time and that it was not a "common" coin (I had shown it to her a few times).

So, she figured out instantly, the "key coin" concept. Heh.
However, I didn't tell her what I paid Mark for this current one image (which was a VERY reasonable price....Coinguy1 is TOPNOTCH and doesn't take advantage of people!!!)

I agree with the grade for market grading.

Technically, I would have graded this coin to be a MS-62BN but then again the grading services have to be a little LOOSE on the grading of these 55DDO's because 99% plus of these coins were already damaged when they left the US Mint. It is quite possible that the die itself may have been the culprit.

Look at the head and cheek. Lots of skull and cheek gashes, etc. Even on the MS-64 and MS-65 graded 1955 DDO's you will see many of the same gashes that plague this issue.

Great pics of that 55 DDO. For the past several years I've been contemplating buying one of those as 1955 is my birthyear. Those Coins are a bit pricey so buying one has just remained a thought.

Upon seeing those excellent pics of yours I've come to realize that the 1955 DDO is simply a 1955 Penny with an error on it. Looking at it really makes me feel dizzy - not something I especially enjoy feeling. image

Guess I'll allocate my large funds for the purchase of a super nice 21 Peace one day. If I spend a couple thousand I'd rather feel joy - not that dizzy feeling.

Thanks again for the excellent view though. image

Let me just try to understand this for a minute---- For years you have wanted a 55 DDO ( not a cheap coin by any standards), But after looking at these pics you just now decided you no longer want one and you decided to get a 21 Peace instead----Just like that....image

I kind of understand what he means (getting dizzy due to the doubling)....but, I wasn't as hot for one until I held one in my hand (pics are pics....they are really cool to hold though image ).

    btw....I have a PCGS MS64 1921 Peace $.
I will take this 1955/55DDO over 3-4 of those any day.

You won't get the cool, natural, toning from those that this has.

The '21 peace is also for my son, in case he decides to go that route, he already has 1 of the keys, but, the "error" coin, 55/55 to me, is hands down the favorite for me between the two (monetary value aside).

Now that's a keeper A BOX coin if there ever was one.
    Extreme! image
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭✭
FullStrike: the 1955DDO cent will just become more and more expensive while the 1921 Peace pricing is relatively static.

The demand for the 55DDO's is slowly making it nearly the #1 coin of choice of the 20th century.

Also, it is not an error! The die was erroneously made that way which is why it is so sought after.

    Errors? Dime a dozen.

This is a variety and the price run on these have only really begun! This is despite the fact that prices have nearly tripled in the past 7 years.

Totally agree oreville, except I think the 55 DDO is THE COIN. Everyone that sees it either recognizes it or wants to know more about it---it is THE COIN.

JRocco: Well, the 1933 $20, the 1916-D merc dime etc. etc. might argue with you, but certainly the 1955 DDO with the 1972 DDO tagging along, are gaining in attention compared to all the others.

Like many collectors I have a dream list of Coins I'd like to get one day. This isn't a list I keep on paper but one I keep in my head - and it's subject to change based on my changing tastes and also what I might forget from day to day .

On that list is a 1921 Peace in MS65 or better, a 1700's Silver Dollar, an 1855 Half cent, an 1855 Large Cent, a 1700's Large Cent or Half Cent, and a really nice Antietam Half. The 1955 DDO used to be on that list ( until a little while ago ). image

Lately I've been zeroing in on some of the better internet dealer sites looking at the 21 Peace and the 55 DDO. These two Coins had seemed to be the ones I really wanted most and the Coins I would first break the $2000.00+ barrier with. As of tonight, I am no longer looking for a 55 DDO.

Are you still confused? I am no longer including the 55 DDO on my dream list is all I'm saying. I've never seen one in hand but those pics gave me a really good feel for what the Coin is all about.

Now this is what I would call a beautiful Coin. Too bad I don't have the cash for something as good.

    1921 Matte Proof Peace $1

The Coin I am likely to end up with will not be a full strike - I'll have to settle for the weakly struck variety. image
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭✭
FullStrike: Then you have missed the real beauty of the 1955DDO cent.

It is an awesome coin even in VF condition and a lot less expensive!

What makes the 55DDO cent so awesome has nothing to do with the grade but the fact that our US Mint botched it up so magnificently.
