Home Buy, Sell, & Trade - U.S. Coins

FSH: Free advice!!!

I have daily written rants, most of which are used at work, so by the time I get to personal stuff,
I’m all ranted out! But this is one I’ve been meaning to write for some time, with good intentions,
to help you sell more of your coins!

I mainly buy (and not sell) on the BST board, and spend just as much time here as on the US Coin forum.
I have spent thousands of dollars with many different folks, so I actually use the boards, and you want me
as a customer. That’s just because my purchases range from $25 to $5,000, I pay immediately, and have
returned about 2 coins in my entire life.

This will be the first rant of many…image

REQUIREMENT #1 – Informative Headline
If your banner doesn’t include at least the (approximate) date of your coin(s) for sale,
forget it, I’ve moved on to another ad. If it is too generic, I’ve moved on. Many also like
to see FSH (For Sale Here) and/or E-Bay in the title. That’s nice, but it won’t preclude me
from looking at your item for sale if it meets the other suggested requirements.

Please be clear in your descriptions, and take a minute to re-read it before posting. And not
the end of the world, but do you like seeing ALL CAPS when reading an ad? While I think caps
are appropriate for words like PCGS, I don’t think they are for an ad that states ALL UNDER $20
while the rest of the ad is case sensitive.

Really, I’m just trying to help you be more effective from a buyer’s standpoint. I have listed examples
below, with specific comments, so please don’t be offended if one of these is your ads, I’m not picking
on you, but on at least 25% of the ads I see on the BST.

Unopened mint product. Some newly listed. All for sale here
OK, is that a 1950 mint product, or something from 2005? And, do you know how much product the
mint actually puts out? Please get a more specific.

Some modern crap on the Bay.
You know I’m not looking at this one! image

Ebay Auctions
Nope, I’ve skipped this one (unless maybe Russ posted it)

FSH: 1891 Liberty Nickel PCGS MS64 on eBay...
Um, is it FSH or available on e-bay?

NICE COIN!!
Somewhat enticing, but another one skipped.

FSH: 1891 Liberty Nickel PCGS MS64 on eBay...
Um, is it FSH or available on e-bay?

Gorgeous PCGS and NGC Type on eBay--Proof Seated Half, Proof 3CN, MS Seated Dime, and MUCH MORE
Very acceptable, it tells me it's on e-bay, it's PCGS and NGC slabs, and coin types help represent dates

f/s/h 1999-D SBA PCGS MS68
perfect

WTB: NGC Storage Boxes
Excellent

NEW 3/08 PCGS MERCURY DIME FOR SALE LISTINGS !
There are always exceptions, and once I know this listing, this is an acceptable headline.

Seriously though that is some good advice. I completely understand everything you wrote about (except for the part where you skip Ebay items image) and agree. Some of the titles are frustrating but if everyone would take an extra 30 seconds to proof read their title, the BST would be like 200% better and more effective.

Well done thread. The advice is sound and to the point.

This thread is the exception to the rule, that advise is worth

what you pay for it. Please feel free to share your rants with us,

as they make a whole lot of sense.image

Well I've got to take exception to at least 1 of your requirements....

Since some of us have a lot to sell/trade, & we're relegated to basically 1 thread, sometimes headlines need to be somewhat generic.
Would I like to have a headline that identifies a few coins.....sure, but at the cost of the others I have, not usually. Maybe I can make a headline up so you'll look at my thread, then get pissed at me for a bogus headline.

If the headline is too generic for you & you pass it over, oh well. Maybe I missed a sale/trade, then again maybe you missed an oportunity too! image

I would be happy if the ebay guys would put ebay in their titles.

Just my thoughts: But EBay Items should not be listed at all here. When I look for coins on EBay I go to EBay and look. I do skip over 99% of the ones that say EBay here in the BST. Also I use SEARCH here it works rather well. So it really dont matter what the heading says. But it is fun to browse.

I wonder who wrote this one?

I found the boxes I was looking for. Thanks to BigD5 for the fair price and fast shipping.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the good words Bear.

Augie, I understand that every title canont be a perfect description, especially when you have a
lot of different coins for sale in one thread. However, I still believe (in your case) that a title can be
exactly what a buyer is looking for. For your example, a bad title:

    Lots of coins for sale

I skipped that one, but how about a good title:

200 slabs for sale, 1910 Lincoln to a 2005 Mint Set, NGC and PCGS OR
Dozens of raw Buffalo nickels, and a few modern MS State Quarter NGC slabs

My point is that the better the title, then the more eyes that will review your ad. Yes, searching is
a good idea as well, but I wonder how many actually do that?

I won't rant about whether this forum should support e-bay coins or not, at least not in this rant, this is
all about grabbing (the readers) attention, the first step in getting me to actually look at your items
for sale. Future rants will be directed towards content, etc. Oh yeah, TTT. imageimage

I agree with most of the post.

I will disagree with those that say ebay items don't belong here.
Sorry, but I trust many of the board members MUCH MORE than I do the unknown ebay person. There are a few I will see EBAY in the title from them and go there.
All they have to do is put it IN the title.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
