What ever happened to the 66 proof nickels?

Didn't Felix Schlag's widow herself pass on recently?

I think I do remember something about four or six years back.

Two of these nickels were reportedly struck and presented to the designer when his initials were
added in 1966. There has been no word as far as I know about their disposition. A Yahoo search
    proved fruitless.
    Tempus fugit.
  • i have both of them. let's keep this between ourselves, ok?
  • I hope someone tucks this thread away so we may hear what happens.

They never existed. Schlag was presented the first two business strike nickels struck with his initials on them. They were not proofs but rather prooflike strikes from brand new dies. They were not preserved in special holdrs and Schlag eventually lost track of them. When asked he said he didn't recall what ever happened to them. They probably got spent.

Pity. Where did you learn that from? I've looked around and couldn't find any info on that.

Still looking for anyone with the following nickel:

Blue 3x5 card listing from the US Mint, dated 1938 with a 1938-D nickel "tabbed" into the slot... with tab toning and a strong strike.

The dealer who has one would not part with it. He said it would leave him in his estate.
