A gold virgin no longer... (pics)

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,062 ✭✭✭✭✭
She just arrived today. This is my very first U.S. Gold coin. I must say I'm very pleased with it and just thought I'd share. It's not nearly as nice as what some have shown recently but for my first it'll do just fine image I had never before seen die cracks in gold before. Something about a gold die crack, it's almost mesmerizing. Gold is good. Any thoughts or opinions on her are welcome.

What was your first U.S. gold coin?

  • Very nice!

My first gold coin was an 1854 Kellogg NGC au58. It is the only gold coin that I have sold and the one I wish I still had the most.

I have converted over to gold only. I am no longer oldcameoproofsguy; I am now goldonlyguy.

I have nearly 1/2 pound of the yellow stuff and still going strong. I like gold a lot. I love Liberty Head gold the best. I just picked up a couple Liberty Eagles this week.

My first gold coin was a one ounce bullion Eagle. My first pre-1933 gold was a $1 dollar coin, engraved into a love token.
  • I got a 2 1/2 Quarter Eagle in a ring from my mother. I should have taken it out and saved it from a life of being in a ring, but I was only 18 and too proud to worry about it. When it came loose one day, I got a screwdriver and re-set the prongs myself.

I have only recently began to collect coins after many years spent collecting firearms. Pre '33 gold appears to be leading the pack, but I am going to slow down until I see how the raw coins I have accumulated grade.

This is kind of fun. Anyone else want to chime in with what their first gold coin was?

My first gold coin was an 1894 eagle that I bought raw. Eventually got it graded in my first PCGS submission:MS62.

Way cool! What a great thing to own.

My first gold coin was an AU 1912 $2.50 - and I still have it.

My Grandma owned several gold coins before FDR made her turn them in 1933. She said she used to receive them as Christmas presents, much the way people put crisp twenties into cards with oval cut outs today. A few years ago, I found an original jewelry-box type Christmas presentation box for a $2.50 gold coin, and that is where my 1912 lives today.

Gold is special - I consider the gold coins I own to be the heart of my collection.
  • Nice coin.

I just purchased two $5 modern eagles and I love them. Working on growing a set of n*** to buy older and more expensive gold coins. image

My first gold coin was a fake California gold token I bought from a coin dealer in the late 60's.

Gold is where you park 20-30% your silver and copper profits. And your Real Estate profits. And your business profits.

Congrats on your first gold coin.

I don't have any US gold yet. Actually my only gold coin isn't all gold, it also has platinum in it. Library of Congress Comm proof
  • Very nice coin, Cladiator, though I don't see the die crack (the old eyes ain't too good)!

I'm almost ashamed to admit it here, but my first gold coin was a "PQBU" half eagle (1882) I bought from (gasp!) Paul Sims for $149.00! That was back in 2000 when I was pretty green. Ended up sending it in to PCGS in 2004... MS62.

Rest assured I am totally aware of how lucky I was!

<< <i>Very nice coin, Cladiator, though I don't see the die crack (the old eyes ain't too good)! >>

It's not your eyes, they're very small on this coin. The obverse is clean and clear of any cracks. The reverse has several very small and fine cracks that are extremely hard to see with the naked eye. With the loupe they will jump out at you.

There is one from the dentils into the upper tip of S2, this re-emerges at the bottom serif of S2 and crosses the field into the bottom of E2. Another comes out the middle of the right side of D1 and shoots into the tip of the left wing. The last one I can remember goes from the left dot to the top left serif of F2.

Great gold coin. Welcome to The Club™.

The coin below was given to me by my grandfather upon my birth, so technically it is my first gold coin.

  • My first (and so far, only) gold coin has been a 1996 quarter eagle ($5). I'm not sure if it qualifies as a coin or just as bullion, but it was still a cool thing to get. There's nothing quite like a gold coin...
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

my first was a ms60 1903S half eagle.

    hm. now to be critical.

you could have chosen a much much better date for the
same price as that coin. An 1881 is about as widgety as one
    can get!

i own one too though and made sure I paid next to nothing
for it slabbed as an au55.

otherwise.. heheh you will find it a lot of fun! liberty half
eagles are a really sweet design/size/look to them.

My very first gold coin was a freebie, Given away by a speaker at the Houston Money Show. It is a 1945 Mexican 2 Peso graded Gem BU by PCGS

The first gold coin I actually paid for was a 1849-O $1 NGC XF45 from a fellow board member.

My first gold coin was a 1909 Quarter Eagle in an NTC holder, at least now it's in a PCGS holder.
