Suspend the coin from a string(s). worked for me with crusty gold

    edit:: should say dirty gold
Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • I've thought about it...I would worry if the coin wasn't
    suspended by the edge somehow.

Has anyone ever tried laying your coin onto the railroad tracks
and then waiting for the train
to try and smooth away hits in the coin's surface for a better grade?
  • I use one on old uncleaned roman era type coins , with a chemical addition of TSP you can get it at the hardware store cheap , it works great but you need to change out the water a few times ,depending on the amount of dirt etc, Then if it needs more work I go to electro cleaning ,it is safe I seen it selling on ebay for 25.00 lol,the whole thing cost less than 5.00 and I can clean hundreds of coins with 1 box of tsp,
any coins that might be of some real value NO WAY lol, to much vibration. I have been a LAB TECH in a electro-plating company for 22 yrs now its finally paid off lol . image

How would the vibration harm the coin? I know nothing about this.

Yes, I put a 1895-O Morgan on the tracks. But the only thing that happened was it was turned into an aluminum piepan. At least that's all I could find after the train passed.

Do a search on ultrasonic, there have been several threads on this with different positions on the subject. In a nutshell some think the vibrations will damage coins, some think it fine. I have tried it on some pocket change with no appreciable difference IMO. It did remove some surface dirt/grime and coins looked none the worse for wear. But I've never tried it on anything expensive.

  • .......Good for Jewelry...Doesn't work for coins.....It wil get rid of some of the dirt and crud....But to get the bad stuff off you have to use chemicals and that's BAD..............image

I've used ultrasonics to get 'green' off coins sometimes. I just put the coin in a little jar, like baby food, with the selected solvent....
Then I just hold, suspend, the jar into the ultrasonic solution for a minute or two.....Works for me.....

    I have!!

When I started collecting (About 9), I had an ugly large cent with tar on it, VF details. I took it out of the olive oil and put it in the water-filled jewelry cleaner for about 6 hours.

I took it out and the tar was still on.

So I dried it up and it turned ugly green in two weeks.

Its still buried in the backyard in the olive-oil filled medicine bottle.

image It cost me $7 imageimage
