What's the point of buying the Reiver's 1794 dollar

in January and flip it right back to Heritage to sell it in the upcoming ANA Sale? My bet is it wasn't bought by a "collector".

  • That sort of thing happens a lot at Heritage. It may be a way of "making" a market.

Most auction houses state in their auction terms that the auction house itself may bid on lots.

There is always the chance that the coin was never paid for.

All valid explanations. Will be interesting to compare the hammer prices when it's all said and done.

Any chance this is Jules "other" 1794 dollar? image

I'd be happy with either one. image

As long as you know that the "other" one is a counterfeit.image

I once got an invoice from an auction house for a lot that I was not the
high bidder on three weeks earlier. I figured that the winning bidder
backed out of the deal and they let it go to me as the next highest bidder.

Under these circumstances, you are under no obligation to buy it---right?

  • The interesting thing is that I was tracking a coin in the January Heritage auction that ended up selling. I just logged on to look at the upcoming Atlanta auction, and boom -- it was already in my list of tracked lots. Guess they figured if I was interested in it last time, I'd probably still be interested in it now. image

Btw, do you guys notice the other 1794 dollar in this ANA sale? Looks like ANACS gave it a grade bump, EF details now (was VF details in the December ANR Baltimore Sale, Old Colony Collection, which was correct IMHO).
