Was my account hi-jacked?

I run about 50-60 e-bay auctions at any given time. Generally, 10 end every night and 10 start up. All sports cards (99% baseball). Yesterday morning I truned on my computer to check out my current auctions. All my auctions were still up and running except I was now offering for sale a motorcycle. A 2005 Kawasaki ZX10 to be precise. The auction looked EXACTLY like all the rest of my auctions (except for the description). Otherwise, same everything! However, when I clicked anywhere on the auction (and I mean anywhere--under 'my ebay', bids, 'contact seller', anything), it sent me directly to my e-mail account sending a message to a yahoo account with a name very similar to mine.

Needless to say, I contacted e-bay right away. I have to admit, they were very, very helpful. Changed passwords, login, email, paypal, etc. They pulled the auction.

Just for kicks, I sent the "seller" an email after E-bay pulled the auction and told the guy I was interested in the motorcycle:

"I've bought baseball cards from you in the past. I
didn't know you also sold motorcycles. I am very
interested. Would you accept a "buy-it-now" offer?
Where is the bike located?
Please respond asap."

This was his response:

"Hello,
As the seller, I would like to take a moment to personally thank you for your interest in my bike. I know that you have many choices out there and I appreciate your interest. I hope you are serious in your intention for buying. Don’t take it personally, but I am tired with people who offer to buy my items and in the end they turn out to be scammers. That is the reason why I ended the auction, after a few enormous bids on my bike. Anyway, the bike is available and I guess you could be its new owner if everything turns out all right and you are serious about buying. The bike is an US model with US specs, comes with all the documents you need to register the bike (manual, clear title in my hand, bill of sale signed by me). The title is clean, and you will receive it along with the bike, so you will have no problems whatsoever registering it there. I am located in Bologna, Italy. I moved here 5 months ago, brought the bike with me, but now I have to sell it back in the States because I can’t register it here, it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on this is US 2,900$. I know it seems a little low, but I will be quite happy to get rid of it, believe me, the bike just sits useless in my garage. If you will take this price, I am willing to pay for shipping and insurance to your location. You will receive your bike by DAS at your home address. I only want this transaction done through EBay’s safe purchase program. In normal circumstances Paypal is my favorite way of receiving the payment but unfortunately for the moment I have some troubles with my paypal account and I am forced not to accept this method at this time. Please get back to me ASAP if you decide to buy, and include your eBay ID and your full name and address so I can start the deal with eBay.
Best regards"

It is amazing how many of these recently have been coming from Italy lately. They must have someone that has developed some new software for hijacking accounts. Alot of the Paypal fraud being reported was also coming from Italy. Remember all of the e-mails stating your Paypal account had been comprimised? They were all from Italy.
  • The EXACT same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, except I was selling Aston Martin cars!!! I was selling them for $15,000 each. I got eBay on the phone and got it all worked out. Was your email hijacked too?
  • I don't know if my e-mail was hijacked. Per e-bay's instructions, I changed my address and password.

There's a Namath RC PSA 8 up right now that's being sold from a hijacked account in Italy as well. I know because I inquired about it.

Hub, Thats really scarey! I am glad you and Ebay took care of it before anything serious happened. I just cant believe the lengths people go to just for the love of money. Its really quite sickening.
  • I gotta say, E-bay acted very quickly. Bravo to them!

    C.O.D.!! I love it.

Scary for all us Ebay sellers out there. I haven't had an ebay issue like that per se, but one that involves my PO box being hijacked I think.

Some ladies mail "Lisa" always shows up in my PO Box, including a credit card bill from a company that I have a credit card with also. Then I got a phone at home asking for this "Lisa" person. So I don't know what is going on. I checked my credit score/history and everything looks OK, but I need to put a fraud alert on my credit I think. I think the phone call person must have run a list of "Lisa's" address and somehow got my phone # from the PO box. But there is so much turnover on PO boxes, I have had this one for three years now, that doesn't make much sense. Anyways, Hub you should check your credit to see if anything else is going on.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
