Platinum Proof and Mint State Comparative Mintages.

I posted this on the Coin Forum by mistake. I think it is more appropriate for the Registry Forum readers. There was one response, made by Cladking, that I included in this post at the bottom:

It's been claimed that these coins are bought by users and used in the production
of consumer products. If true the mintages lose most of their meaning. Look for the
coins that have traded close to the bullion value the longest yet still are relatively
low mintage.

It's always tough to guess what collectors will want. The proof platinums are spec-
tacular and the uncs have a great luster. There are already some collectors of these
so maybe their opinions would carry a lot more weight.

The larger mintage of the ms coins may provide a level playing field, and balances out the differences in the Mint's packaging of the proofs. Additionally the proofs are all "type coins". This makes both Mint State and Proof plats. very exciting to collect.

I prefer proof because of the different reverse every year.
I think 1998 is my favorite

I like the MS coins better. I think they look nicer, and the Mint markup on the proofs is beyond absurd (which is why their numbers are so low).

I'm not having any luck finding someone selling the 2006 1/10 ounce in MS. My local dealer is out of the market. Anyone got a suggestion?

Thanks for the breakdown. If I collected plat, I would vote for the proof because I like the contrast. I don't have a single platinum coin yet. I only have a handful of gold coins, too. Has someone done the same for the mintages of the gold eagles? Thansk in advance. Ray

I don't think I've seen the mintage for the gold american eagles posted on the forums. I am also interested in what they are.

This should be interesting Bruce. There's a thread going on now on the Coin Forum about the time it takes to wear down clad and silver pieces to perhaps P01 levels. I'd say that a plat. piece would take considerably longer, but assuming that is not your goal, you sure have a nice conversation piece, and a great "heads or tails" (aguila o sol) decision maker there. image

I prefer platinum proofs myself. I love all the reverses and the low mintages. I think the 99 and 01 are probably my favorites.

I also like the alligator on the coin. The sad thing is, it that I can't even remember whats on the reverse for a lot of the years. I wish I didn't have to keep them all locked up. I haven't even had a chance to look at all the proofs all at once. Soon I'll have them all in 1 place in my us platinum type set. it should be fun.
