The Heritage images show light patches that actually don't exist on the coin. In reality the toning coverage is nearly 100% in the fields.

Nice Russ image What a great coin too. I never get tired of looking at it. BTW, Heritage photos suck 99% of the time. You've got to have your "Heritage Goggles" on when browsing their coins.

both sets of shots are nice for different reasons.
heritage should give two sets of shots, their in house people, and then russview.

The RUSSVIEW show those east to west lines in the left obverse fields and upper left reverse area. Tough to find those lines in heritage's picsimage

Soooo...was this a late die state? What an awesome break!

Heritage's images are subpar given its budget and the value and quantity of the coins it handles.

That coin makes me wonder about cracks and metal flow

That is a big a$$ crack, but I see no soft or weak strike on the obverse!

    Russ:

Please just do us all a favor and apply for the job... seriously... There are a handful of others here that are outstanding too that deserve recognition... Cacheman, Cosmicdebris and if I spent another 30-45 seconds I am sure I would remember those that I forgot.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Like Russ' head, it's cracked down the middle on the reverse!

I really appreciate the compliment, but in fairness to Heritage I can spend a lot more time on each coin. While some stuff - white Morgans and cameo proofs for example - are basically production line work that I can whip out quickly, other coins take many shots to get right. I took around 20 pics of each side of this one to arrive at these images.

O'mygosh, I agree that Russ' photos are superior.

RussView is far and away the better picture. The question is is the RussView the most accurate representation of the coin?

Terminal die state, of which all known examples of this die marriage (BB.168) belong. Current rarity ranking has this listed as either a R.4 or R.5. There've been many on the market of late, so I'd say that this is probably a mid- to high-R.4.

BTW - nice coin, and nice RussView images too.
