How do you know when a restrike was restruck??

Like for example, a 1919 Straits Settlements Proof Dollar Restrike? Is the value of a restrike always significantly lower than an original same-year strike? Are restrikes only for proofs? Thanks.

Not hardly. Maria Theresa thalers are still being restruck in Austria as we communicate.image

  • You will never know unless you check the numismatic mint records, or if the mints made some tell signs on the restruck coins. Some of the world's most well-known for restrikes are Austria and Russia. Restrikes aren't necessarily cheaper than the original, in fact in some cases, may be more expensive than the original because of the poor quality grades available, hence forcing demand on the restrikes. Well that's for the Russian numismatic field though.

Restrikes do not necessarily have to be in proof condition but of course, practised from time to time to create some sort of "novelty"

Not sure about proof restrikes. But supposedly many regular restrike issues, especially 1915 ducats, are closer to PL. So like GX said, I'm sure when it comes to grades, the restrikes are the more popular ones...
