<< <i>dont think so as long as korea wins.. usa wins they are in. im not 100% sure though. clemens is pitching tomorow.. >>
ah ok i don't pay attention to that i was watching PTI and they intervied the catcher and he said something to that nature.
i was under the impression that these guys were born in and are citizens in the countries they play for. but many of the island teams have dudes born in the us on their team - what are the rules? i'm just curious where the line is drawn - hell let's all play for team pangea.
to me i think its been a huge success. maybe they will get other stations to carry it in 2009. not being able to waych all the games especially the usa play i think sux!

I thought we (USA) would be playing teams with a bunch of guys we'd never even heard of or seen before.
citizenship laws in each country is different. In many countries, birthplace is irrelevent, but lineage, ancestry, or ethnicity is not.
Countries like Italy, Germany, Austria, and Finland will grant citizenship to American born people if they can prove the respective ethnicity. A lot of the times, those countries will allow such people to keep their American citizenship too. It has nothing to do with Bud Selig, but more to do with a country like Italy getting an application from Mike Piazza claiming citizenship by right of blood. Citizens of a country are allowed to play on their respective national teams.
A-Rod could have gone both ways, sure. This is the era of globalization where multiple identities are practiced and expressed depending on the context of the situation. Is Piazza American? Yes, if you count birthplace or where a person grows up. Is Piazza Italian? Yes, if you put importance on lineage.
So, my take home message is that birthplace and where you were raised are not the only determinants for identity. Heck, many of you would say I am American, but truth is, I was not born here and speak and practice German culture daily when I am not on this board.
