Barber Halves and a few others just back from the PCGS factory

Here's my latest submission to PCGS on the 15 day service.

1 1934 S$1 USA AU58-Looked like a slider MS63-MS64 I bought raw. Beautiful AU58 though
2 Texas 50C 1935-S USA MS67-Bought as raw MS63 for $125 "OH BABY OH!"
3 Boone 50C 1935 USA Cleaning-Bought as raw MS63 with the Texas above for $125. I don't see it.
4 1892-S 50C USA AU53-Bought as raw AU
5 1894-O 50C USA VF25-NGC VF25
6 1895 50C USA XF40-ANACS XF45
7 1896-O 50C USA XF45-ANACS AU50-Nice coin. Had to convince PCGS three times it was a great coin.
8 1897 50C USA AU53-ANACS AU50
9 1898 50C USA Cleaning-ICG AU50 I took a gamble on
10 1899-O 50C USA XF45-ANACS AU53-Looked like a very nice XF45 to me so I bought it.
11 1901 50C USA AU50-ANACS AU50
12 1906-S 50C USA XF45-NGC AU50-Most NGC coins downgrade
13 1909 50C USA Damage-I didn't see it when I busted it out of an ANACS AU50 holder
14 1912 50C USA AU50-Bought as raw XF+/AU
15 1912-S 50C USA F15-NGC VF30 "OUCH"
16 1913-D 50C USA XF45-ANACS AU50
17 1914 50C USA G6-Bought as raw G+. Oh so close to a VG. Is there a market for G6 premium coins?
18 1846 S$1 USA Damage-Coin looks like original XF.

All in all I'm a happy kid. My registry set is up to date and includes 4 other pieces as well.

I also submitted a trime on the Quarterly special and it came back as damaged. Couldn't see it on that little coin. It's a nice XF/AU 1861. Nothing special.

If anyone has any nice XF45s I need, please contact me. I'm happy to trade any of my AU coins plus I have about 10 other coins I can trade with you.

Any idea what a 1935-S Texas in MS67 is going for? This is a nice white coin with the lightest of periphreal toning. Very nice looking.

Thanks Abe. I also added a 13-P, 09-O, 07-S and 04-S in PCGS XF45 to my Barber Half set. Many thanks to Gary Hultman for those.

    A 92-S in 53 and a 96-O in 45? Nice dates!

Thanks Casey. Glad you like them. Putting together the set in XF45 has been a MAJOR challenge but a fun one. The best part so far is getting to know the other collectors of this series and helping each other out.

Craig, congrats on the submission. I have to agree with you, NGC coins always seem to get bumped a grade or so. The 1896-O EX: ANACS 50 now crossed as an XF45 ( after three tries !!! ???) how does it compare to the one you just bought in PCGS 35 ? - I know you thought the new VF35 was a lock 40 or better.

It looks like Arizona Sun's set was deleted from the Barber Half Basic Set Registry. I think that Gary sold quite a few coins directly to Craig. Great score, Craig.

As I remember correctly, Gary was amassing quite a few MS halves. I think we'll see his set emerge soon enough with some higher end examples. With the incredible prices most VF-XF/AU Barber halves have been selling for recently, I can't blame Gary for unloading - either thru EBay or direct sale - his mid range coins.

Month after month - recently - I keep reading that the MS Barber market has flat lined. No so IMHO. Every coin I have looked at that is choice is selling for substantially more than any published prices.

Even lower end coins are holding their own; mid range VF-XF halves in original condition are skyrocketing. (Thank you Craig for helping boost the market; when may we see some images of your coins on the Registry, Craig ? All I see of your coins are the ones you've won from Tyler ! ) .

A few years ago nobody gave Barber halves a second look; now too many people are looking. I'm glad I completed my set when I did. My lower end set which I am currently working on is almost complete and am missing only four coins. (excluding the micro O ). Once complete, I'll be cracking out coins for my raw book and then selling off the duplicates - especially now that the market is hot.

Thanks Mike and Tyler. I bought the 96-O at Heritage about a year ago. Mike, I sent you a PCSG Truview picture of that coin about 5 months ago. Just goes to show that if you believe in a coin, stick with it.

I bought Tyler's 98-O which should bump up to XF40. It just doesn't have the detail for a 45 but stranger things have happened. My new 15-P is a beaut in an old green holder. I may send both in for a Review vice cracking them out. What do you guys think?

Pictures. Oh boy. That is something I would love to do. My main excuse is I just don't have the time. From playing Coast Guard (The new CBS hit series "The Unit" is based on my day to day work with the Coast Guard-kidding), finishing grad school, coaching soccer, playing softball and being a husband and daddy to my little girl, I just don't have the time to take Tyler quality pictures. Ultimately, I would like to send in my 45s to PCGS for the TruView service. I'd like to do it as a complete set but may send in what I have now to appease the masses. Tyler, how do you take your pictures? They are beautiful.

I thought about selling my lower grade dupes but I like your idea Mike of cracking them out and putting them into a Dansco. Might be a fun project for my daughter and I to do to put togther a VG-F set. Kind of a waste of time to sell a $30 coin on Ebay.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. You pay strong money for coins that aren't available. After working in a shop part-time to asking dealers at shows and watching Ebay and other auction houses, these coins are just not out there. Can you say condition rarity?

    Craig,

Resurrected that old email. Saved the coin in question...don't know if the image is too large to link here, but here goes:

    Sorry, its 80kb...won't post

So, I posted my 1896-O in its old NGC holder instead.

Heritage sold a 1935-S PCGS 67 Texas for $833 last December. It wasn't all that attractive, IMO. Tidy profit ahead should you choose that route.

Congratulations Craig on a very successful submission.

I agree with you Mike that nice quality is bringing strong money above GS, which I am feeling is not very reliable sometimes in the series.

I received 3 additions I have gotten the past couple of months from Heritage today. 1906 PCGS64, 1907 PCGS65, ex Price/Duckor, and a 1912-D PcgsMS64. Nothing real rare but very pleased with all the additions. Just updated my registry and I am working on pictures this evening.

Anything above F-12 in any of the Barber series are nice and tough to find. Enjoy Craig and fellow Barber budds.

  • Nice job Craig..........submissions that were downgraded from AU-50 to XF-45 are right up your alley. Did you request the XF-45 grade or hope to cross at the same AU-50 grade?

    Dan,

I've always cracked them out. Usually, NGC coins go down a full grade. I had a really sweet NGC XF45 that was cracked out and became an AU53. NGC really missed that one. Outside the holder, it was an even nicer coin. ANACS goes both ways. I've cracked AU50s out because most of the time they are XF45s. But, some are undergraded as well. Buy the coin, not the holder comes to mind.

I've also cracked out an ANACS coin that had perfect XF45 detail. Nice toning as well. The problem was that the coin's reeding was missing. Someone had messed with it a long time ago. ANACS completely missed it as it wasn't a NET coin. Big bummer there as the coin is quite difficult to find in XF.

I added the 12-S to the Registry and am trying to work a trade Ed's Nice Barber Halves. Does anyone know him. He has a 96-P in XF45 and i have an AU55.

Any guesses how high the 02-O will go tomorrow night? Or Tyler's 96-O or 97-S?

Best of luck to everyone tomorrow.
