$6,325 for an 1890-o MS 64 PL Dollar?

That's the price realized at the ANR sale. It is nearly 65 DMPL money and more than twice 65 PL money. Anyone care to explain? Does an Amon Carter provenance really add that much juice?

IMHO, the coin was a 65 DMPL.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  • In my opinion the coin was good shot to a MS65, zero shot to DMPL-- under today"s DMPL standards I think the person who outbid me will lose their shirt if they foolishly think it will get it in an NGC DPL 65 holder. I was underbidder to the phone ($5,000) because the old owner was my mother's relative in Texas and we unfortunately sold other duplicates related to the collection in 1973/74 at Stacks (this one was a superior, different group). Several major dealers put $1700 to $2,500 value to me presale (Laura Sperber, etc). Three bidders apparently thought it could both upgrade and get the DMPL rating, bidding to $4000 on the floor. I was bidding on the family connection, super eye appeal, and quality. At some point, you have to stop when the bids are silly! OH well --image
