New member and need your input.

I have been reading this forum for some time and have really enjoyed reading all the information gathered from here. I recently got back into collecting after taking some time off for many years. My grandfather got me interested in coins a long time ago and I bought here and there and then got married and had kids. I live in South Carolina but don't tell anyone.

I had a friend call me up and he wanted me to look at some coins he had collected over the years so I went over to his house and looked through what he had. About the only thing that was interesting about his collection was a 1925 $2.50 golld indian.

He had a lot of V-nickels and various junk silver. I did run across two error coins that I did find interesting also. One was a nickel planchet that was blank and the other was a 1944 lincoln that has either been struck off center or struck on a different planchet.

Here are some pictures (although not the best photographer in the world for lack of a better camera) Can someone please tell me in your opinion what is going on with this particular lincoln? It does have a piece of the coin that looks to be snagged and peeled back in about the 12:00 o'clock area. It is also larger than a regular wheat cent and has a large lip on the edge.

I put a 1925 wheat cent next to it to give you some reference as to it's size. Give me your opinion and something I can take back to him on what to do with this coin. It probably isn't worth much if anything but I told him to hang on to it. Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

  • To me, the 44 looks like its encased in some type of edge retaining mount........... not an error, just post mint damage/alteration

What you have is 1944 that has a collar of copper (?) around it used to attach it for making some sort of jewelry like a bracelet or necklace.

You know, that makes the most sense but why in the world would anyone do that with a penny? I can understand a gold coin or something with some value but a penny? That never crossed my mind!

It may have some personal romantic significance. Perhaps a cent that was given to a soldier by his girlfriend during WWII and carried by him thoughout his battles with the enemy. Upon his return he had it made for her as a memento.

That would make a good eBay story, anyway.

Looks like it`s surround by a bezel with the intention of being a necklace or bracelet as already stated. Maybe whoever had it done had a son or father that either went to war or died that year while at war. Don`t know for sure, just a theory.

    Welcome.

Your photos are much better than you give yourself credit for.

Stick around and enjoy the show!

  • Thanks for the welcome from everyone. I knew the people here would get this right. I never even considered this coin would have been a piece of jewelry but now that I look at it closer, I see it is exactly as you all have mentioned.

Thanks everyone for their input. I'll slink back to my corner and read more about this hobby so I don't appear to be a greenhorn at this. image

Being that we are near the bottom in most things but first in trailer parks, black velvet Elvis painting collections and Rebel flags, I try not to mention it very often.

  • Why don't you want to be and look like a greenhorn? It's fun. Say, ask what you want! I think it's great being a newbie greenhorn. I've been doing it four a little over 4 years and wouldn't want it any other way.

Yes we do and probably what I will die from. Good ole southern food.

I know I sound like I am hard on SC but really it is not as bad as I make it out to be. I've been here since 1980 so I guess I could have moved if it was that bad but then my wife would be mad because she thought the world ended at the county line around here. image

Thanks again for the warm welcomes.

I really like to read a lot and this hobby has so many facets to it that I find it impossible to be well versed in it. I am 45 years old and like I said earlier, my grandfather got me interested in this hobby when he handed me a mason jar full of Morgans, Liberty half dollars, Flying Eagle quarters, wheats, etc. and told me it would be something to remember him by. I still have that jar and the coins and although they are just junk silver, I cherish them like they were gold or platinum.

I am working on getting my daughters interested in this hobby with me so they can appreciated it also. I already have my oldest interested in classic cars but my youngest would seem to be the one that would love this hobby. She tends to hang on to stuff rather than discard it. (I guess that would make her a packrat too)

That depends on the county I guess. I've been here my entire life and still have some counties I wonder if the world did end when I drive through image

I too have had a collection passed on to me, mine from my great-grandfather. I grew up bugging my dad to let me look at the pretty coins, so I understand the sentiment of your collection. I've enjoyed being here gathering knowledge so far while trying to work on the collection so that it might be in better shape for future generations. Best of luck
  • Welcome aboard. Glad to have you here.

    By the way...nice pics.

You and I both know there are some pretty backwards places around these parts. Sometimes I just look and chuckle to myself on the things that go on around here.

I can't think of better hobby than collecting coins. Something about it has always appealed to me. I am just disappointed it took me this long to get back to it.

Thanks again for everyone giving me a nice welcome. I look forward everyday to reading the threads here. I know...I know...I have no life. image
