Do you collect not by series, but what appeals to you?

For example, I like to collect error coins. But I often wander off and buy things that don't at all fit into my collection, but I still like them. My latest buy was 2 uncut sheets of 4-subj $1 notes, autographed Anna Escobedo Cabral, and they do not really fit into my collection of error coins (at least I think )
Does anyone do this too? Or do you just STRICTLY collect the series you collect?

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
Then there are the other things I keep going just because I know that I can't always find things in my main theme (barber, seated and modern circ stuff).
If however, I see something that truely calls out to me, I'm not beyond straying to the other side of the tracks (one time I bought a PROOF Italian coin just because it was beautiful. I stashed it away, and it would probably take me weeks to find it, but I still think it's beautiful - I just don't remember what it looks like anymore).
I'd say 90% of my time, energy and $ goes to Morgans and the other 10% to other coins (Jeffies, WLH, foreigns).

Currently, down at the local coin shop, I have an original 1950 proof set on layaway. I also have an original 1954 proof set.
Semper ubi sub ubi
since there may be coins in that series I am not
interested in collecting, for example certain overdates
like a 1918/7 S SLQ which by most is considered
necessary to complete your SLQ collection. When you
factor in all the double dies, large and small letters,
large and small mint marks, etc. where does it stop?
If you want to go bananas just look at the 1850's
#20 Liberty's in the PCGS population reports.
So I pick specific coins in a series and focus on eye appeal.
I have duplicates, triplicates, etc. of many coins.
That's how I collect. I am a classic collector.
Eye appeal, that's what its all about.
My website
i think people who gave the advice that a collection should
have some theme, meaning, order, etc.. is absolutely correct.
i buy half eagles to enjoy... i look at all the rest.
My calender at work from N News has a Civil War Token with a boat on it, that I am probably going to look for at the next show or two.....

The US mint cut way back on quarters and half dollars during much of the 1880s due to their concentrating on producing morgan dollars at that time.
Type Coins are what appeal to me the most.
