Do you collect not by series, but what appeals to you?

For example, I like to collect error coins. But I often wander off and buy things that don't at all fit into my collection, but I still like them. My latest buy was 2 uncut sheets of 4-subj $1 notes, autographed Anna Escobedo Cabral, and they do not really fit into my collection of error coins (at least I think image)

Does anyone do this too? image Or do you just STRICTLY collect the series you collect?

I've been known to stray from the core collection from time to time. When I do I usually only hold it for a while and sell it off when it bores me image
  • Currently by what appeals to me.....Morgan Vam's and Wheat errors.

90% of my collecting $$$ go into series that I actively study and collect. The other 10% for coins that pique my interest. The intermediate-long term "stick" rate for the 10% is low.

I have a few sets of coins that I consider my main theme in collecting (type and bust).

Then there are the other things I keep going just because I know that I can't always find things in my main theme (barber, seated and modern circ stuff).

If however, I see something that truely calls out to me, I'm not beyond straying to the other side of the tracks (one time I bought a PROOF Italian coin just because it was beautiful. I stashed it away, and it would probably take me weeks to find it, but I still think it's beautiful - I just don't remember what it looks like anymoreimage).

I collect Morgans actively, but will pick up any coin that interests me along the way.

I'd say 90% of my time, energy and $ goes to Morgans and the other 10% to other coins (Jeffies, WLH, foreigns).

While I collect by series, my father-in-law collects by eye appeal. He doesn't care what date, mintmark, or series he's looking at. If he likes how it looks, that's the coin for him. When he visited last year, we went to a local coin shop. He really liked a later-date capped bust half that was just beautiful with nice gold and yellow album tone, so he bought it. That's the only bust half he has, but that's typical of his collection.

Whatever catches my eye and if the price is right.

Currently, down at the local coin shop, I have an original 1950 proof set on layaway. I also have an original 1954 proof set.

  • Never a serious series collector during my life
since there may be coins in that series I am not
interested in collecting, for example certain overdates
like a 1918/7 S SLQ which by most is considered
necessary to complete your SLQ collection. When you
factor in all the double dies, large and small letters,
large and small mint marks, etc. where does it stop?

If you want to go bananas just look at the 1850's
#20 Liberty's in the PCGS population reports.

So I pick specific coins in a series and focus on eye appeal.
I have duplicates, triplicates, etc. of many coins.
    That's how I collect. I am a classic collector.

Eye appeal, that's what its all about.

I collect all denominations, all years, all types, errors, etc. No idea of what I'm doing. I make a hand written list of what I need, Circle what I really need and sometimes add a list of what I'd like to have. I then go to a coin show and seldom look at any list. I just buy what I can afford, like or can't pass up. To old to care.

    no.

i think people who gave the advice that a collection should
have some theme, meaning, order, etc.. is absolutely correct.

i buy half eagles to enjoy... i look at all the rest.

  • Having just started collecting in the last year, I have not found my focus yet. I have a hard time choosing a type since there is always a year that is finacially out of reach. If I cannot complete it, I don't want to start it. I collect what catches my eye. Draped Bust Cents are my current passion. I don't have one yet but I am on the hunt.

I try and stay focus at coin shows for my target collections (VG Barber Halves, VG Barber Quarters, Gold Type Set), but I stray away sometimes..... Purchased a AU Barber Dime and a original 1958 Mint Set because I had to have them after seeing them.....

My calender at work from N News has a Civil War Token with a boat on it, that I am probably going to look for at the next show or two.....
Collection under construction: VG Barber Quarters & Halves
  • .........My sets are pretty well complete, But last year I was Bumming around coin shops in my area and found some CW Tokens. Now I'am hooked on them also Conders and Hard Times,....I guess it never ends......................image

I stay focused on GSA CC and NON CC dollars and National bank notes but will pick up any numismatic item which represents a bargain.. image
  • Yes. Aside from a type set I'm working on, my purchases are all over the place and completely random. Lately I've become more and more fond of Morgans. I like the size and adorability.

I bought a quarter from the 1880s just because I found the low mintage interesting.

The US mint cut way back on quarters and half dollars during much of the 1880s due to their concentrating on producing morgan dollars at that time.

Sort of. Because my core project is a type set, XF & AU in the 19th century and MS in the 20th, I can make almost anything fit into it. Usually if I see a coin and it is so nice I just have to have it, it is because it is better than my type coin. Usually I sell off the coin I upgraded, but not always.

I'm not a big fan of Dates & Mintmarks. However I seem to be stuck on the Platinum Proof series because the reverses keep changing every year. Also, I really love Peace Dollars and may be on a roll with them. I have the 1922- 1924 and 1926 so far. When I get the 1921 of my dreams I may be finished with the series.

Type Coins are what appeal to me the most.

HMM i generally collect by series but also will buy what appeals to me. i dont collect any modern non-circulating legal tender issues..BUT i just had to get that 2004 Canadian Bullwinkle quarter. i dont know why- i just like it. This is the only such coin (to me they are not even coins if they dont circulate-but that is a whole 'nother arguement.) that i have. Bob

I have collected a little of almost everything over the years. Today, and for 20 years, it has been PL and variety Morgans. However, I always stray when I find a neat and appealing coin. Just fiished a full SMS set (65-67 and half of the 64 SMS set) and am a coin away on my Braided Hair half cents, among a dozen "other" sets I am working on side on -- even though I try to remind myself all the time not to distract myself with the other stuff.
