MS60 Gold. Can it be attractive?

I think so!
I just picked this one up and am pleasantly surprised how attractive it is for an MS60.

    I agree!

Of course it depends on the coin but most low MS or slightly worn gold looks good to me (unless it has a major distraction kind of scratch or something).

All my early gold is AU (pun intended) and I'm happy with the way it looks. I just posted some to the gold coin thread.

Absolutely. I've got a 73-CC Double Eagle in a Segs 60 holder that's much nicer than the PCGS AU-58 holdered one sold in the March 2005 Heritage sale.
  • A lot of US gold grades 60-61, as a result of the soft surfaces and the fact that most were heavy coins. There are a lot of examples of coins as late as the 1890s where none grade finer than 61.

It sure can be pretty! Here's an MS61 I just sold the other day for comparison.

Why does MS61 sound worse than MS60 though? image

I have several better date US gold coins in MS60 slabs. They are nice looking coins with nice luster and minimum marks. I have fun trying to figure out why they were graded so low and what the graders didn't like about the coin. The last one was an Indian $5 with original luster and the usual scatered tick marks for $340 which is less than AU58's bring. Its a decent looking coin and I like it. I think in some cases the MS60 may be graded that low because of a rim problem that may not be visible inside the holder. But this is only a theory.

If collectors are picky, pretty coins within this grade are possible and in the case of gold may be purchased without large premiums.

That's an exceptional MS60 you've got there, by the looks of it. Of course, it's also in a 17-year-old holder, so who knows whether it would grade so low now. But yes, main question, sometimes a 60 looks good. But usually not.

I find it had to locate MS60 gold (most of it grades higher).

Good point. I rarely see MS60 gold. Usually its either 61 or better or 58 or worse.

Iv'e had a few pcgs ms60 gold foil holdered 1857s $20. double eagles from the ss central america which were quite nice for the assigned grade of ms60, I always wondered if many in this group of 5000+ were undergraded image

Most of my US gold pieces are AU58-MS62. At MS63 the prices are not affordable in anything I like.

I make an exception for Classic Commemorative gold pieces, where only MS63 or better will do.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    Braddick....nice coin in that holder.

When I reentered the the market and started looking for type & better date $5 libs about 3 years ago....I ended up with a lot of 60-62 coins that will always be just that....60-62 coins. Some are nicer than others but in general...I do not even like viewing them anymore.

After adjusting to the price differential.....63+ gold just makes more sense. Learning what to look for takes a little time and graduating from Whatsamatta U.
