This 1915-S Buffalo nickel was not an easy find

And, like the 1913-S Type II, is more expensive than PCGS price guide, even raw. Travelled many a mile by mule to root it out. If you find one of these in XF45 or better, grab it--and then call me! This one is AU58.

Very nice guy. Clean surfaces and a high end AU. image

If you didn't already know, many 15-S Buffalos have dark coloring. Something to do with the planchet composition I suppose.

Guy..........you floor me! Looks like the correct style mintmark.

Nice........real nice...........That coin is an ungodly AWFULLY difficult coin to find in that grade.

    Did you check the rim?????

Pete, LOL. Yeah I checked the rim!! Every time now.

Sort of interesting dynamic was at work when I acquired the coin. Money obviously can buy anything, but I'm not rich and do need to shop for bargains. I really liked the coin and judged it as AU. After checking the Greysheet value at $390 I asked the dealer for his price. When he quoted me $425, I definitely paused. Who wants to pay bust-out retail for any raw coin? But the seller, a very nice older guy with whom I've had numerous conversations over the last year at a couple of local shows, smiled and told me the 1915-S was a bargain at that price and that I wouldn't be sorry. I trusted him and bought the coin; he in turn trusted me and told me to just mail him a check--I didn't have $425 on me.

In any case, I'm glad I got it. This was a few months ago and already it's real-world value has escalated. Moreover, there's a sense of accomplishment in not only filling a hole, but filling it with a coin that is PQ for the grade.

P.S. I'm told that the PCGS price guide contemplates AU coins as being low-end AU, as opposed to 58. There's a little edge there.

Nice coin! The '15-S is an underrated coin-especially in high circulated grade.

  • these buffalo nickle threads are great as are your coins. i am learning alot from all you buff guys.

thats why ive been searchinmg hard for really nice grades for the last 3 weeks. picked up about 8 raw and i even got a (34) piece buff partial set with the folder for $79.00 alot of D and S mint marks (on the bay #8393882102)

when you guys mentioned checking the rim, did you mean that you look at the rim near the mint mark to see if its been added(the tool mark stripes)?

Its not the rim but rather in the edge of the coin. They drill a hole into the edge and then use a tool to push a mint mark up from below the surface of the coin. The hole is then filled and the edge is then smoothed to hide their work.
