I think this to be an interesting set of data for:
1. Non-SMR listed cards at grade
2. Population effect
3. Study on a non-mainstream set
4. Break potential of sets

I don't keep up with the prices in this set anymore but I would consider these to be very strong prices.
I bid on all cards I did not have a 10 in which was over half and won just one card. Someone must have been trying to keep the Davalillo out of my hands.
Don't know what you paid Bob for the set but it looks like you will make a handsome profit on your flip of this set.
In this case, it pays to buy a set and turn around quickly break it piece by piece.
Jim
Initial bids do seem strong. I have about 29k into the set. The Davalillo was the strongest bid card, save the McNally - pop is third lowest, but not ridiculous.
It will be interesting to see what the Marichal and the other superlow PSA10 pop go for.
Thank you for your interest in the set; I recognize you as an advanced collector.
I will continue to post results.
John
Drug test the guys going after the McNally, but not the B. Robinson (is that pop 2 correct?).
There have been complaints over the last several years about some star cards in high grade dramitically falling in price. What I noticed about the cards under dicussion, was the PSA 9 price had been ten to twenty times the PSA 8 price at the peak. They are moving back towards the 2X to 5X range that had been mentioned. The exceptions are pop one cards that have stayed pop one and very low pop cards that are very very popular but generally this rule has got them all. It seems that that little seemingly low value guideline has had great forecasting ability when applied to the market. Whoever noticed that and put it in deserves a pat on the back for a true hobby insight.

Ha--I don't have an ego John but that kind of praise will get me to bid twice as much on the next lot.

Good one, Jim.... lol
John
WOW--you have got what every seller dreams of--Charlie Merkel dedicated to achieving a 10.0 set and another serious bidder alongside him.
$541.87 for the pop 9 Camilo Pascual are you kidding me!!!
$587.87 for the pop 5 Rick Monday???
Selling the set piece by piece is proving to be a wise financial move.
At these prices, I am just picking up the crumbs(but I am bidding up your winners).

I was surprised at the levels to be sure. I think the HOFs are the bargains!!
Thanks for bidding - I will keep posting results.
Yeah--the Mantle at $5,800 is a real bargain.
Good luck.

Jim,
Too bad there isn't a sarcastic emoticon.

<< <i>thanks for taking the time to post the results. I was tracking them since I saw your initial post about breaking the set. I am about 9 cards short of a PSA-9 set...never will get to the loft you guys are, but hey, my vintage wax collection eats up too much $$.
Manny(mams) >>
Manny,
You are welcome - its always interesting to see how a set will break. I am really pleased with the listing that Carl has done. He' really a coin guy, but his 100% feedback and organization outweigh the potential familiarity concerns. Any comments on on the listing themselves would be appreciated. Thanks.

<< <i>Sorry John--I will try to do better in that next stage--so far I have won 1 card in each section.....but have been bidding on most 10s I needed.
Jim >>
Jim,
Thanks!!! I hope you are filling out your set. This last round really had very few low pops. The final has the Seaver, Wills, Marichal and McCovey. It should be interesting.
John
I thought that Pete Rose should have gone for at least double what it did. That group shows that snipers don't always get the best deals. Many of those prices were hanging out there for a long time. My congrats to those who did step up to the plate.
Round #3 data is cleaned up. I was surprised at the Aaron and Rose, but POP seems to be the overriding force in this auction.
Totals after 36 cards:
Gross: $ 23993.75
PSA 9 SMR: $9175.00
%: 262
The final 18 cards go off with several low pop cards - Seaver, Wills, McCovey and Marichal. There is no PSA10 Mays, but this one is the closest that I've seen. I will post final results after they come in.

Yes I was delighted by the last round especially! Thank you and everyone else who participated.
The net profit will be about 3-4k, or a little over 10%.

Isn't that like saying Ted Williams was an above-average ballplayer?
