Need help guys! Ebay's second chance rule

I was bidding on some cards & I did not win. Then I got this Ebay second chance notice saying the bidder would take my bid because the high bidder was not going to take it. It was in my "my messages" in my Ebay account but it just seems weird. Quotes like

Good news! Buy The Item You Recently Bid On!
Note: To purchase this item, do not reply to this email and do not click on the Respond Now Button, as you will not receive an answer. Contact the seller by forwarding this message at this e-mail address: esaleforu@yahoo.com .
You expressed an interest in an item titled:

by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the highest bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller of that item is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your last bid price of US $2,626.00 because the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction. If you accept this offer the transaction will go strictly according to eBay rules and policy regarding to this Second Chance Offer. After receiving this offer you are obligated to contact the seller ( esaleforu@yahoo.com ),confirm or decline the offer.
Thank you for using eBay!

If this message is an offer to sell an item without winning it on the eBay Web site (including Second Chance Offers sent through My Messages) please do not respond to the sender. These "outside of eBay" transactions are unsafe and not covered by eBay purchase protection programs.

I email him to ask what is this & he says

Hello thesplendidsplinter ,
I can sell the set to you for the price of your bid $2626 including shipping. If you want to buy it now please reply soon with your full name and shipping address so ebay can start the transaction and give you the invoice cause this deal will be made under ebay's protection program for the power sellers.Ebay will tell you in the invoice all you have to do in order to complete the deal.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Thank You!

  • Sounds odd to me... You should be able to go to your "My Ebay" page and see if someone has offered you a "second chance" item... You do not need to send the seller your name or address or any info, that is BS. I would stay away.

  • What was the item? Can you provide a link to the auction?

Under the second chance rule, if you accept you in essence won the auction. All auction rules will apply. You will see the item number as ended with your id as the winner at that price. I'm just wondering why you got a second chance offer so fast. Is there more to this auction then we know...

Edit to add--I just checked the auction. That one seems really fishy. three people bid higher than you. Somethings not right there.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • It was on "my Ebay" under my messages so it is completely bizarre.
Why would you have to hurry to do something? Wouldnt a seller just contact a person & ask if they want it? That seems more realistic.
The item is for $2600, so it ain't cheap. But it would be a heck of a deal. BUt not worth taking a lesson of $2600.

From the time the auction ended to the second chance offer, how much time transpired? E-mail the high bidder and find out where he is located and why he backed out--and what else is he currently bidding on? Is this a pattern? Then offer the seller your lowest offer.
  • Link to auction

    Red flags are everywhere

Little less than 2 days since auction ended

3 people ahead of me would have had to turn it down

  • Hope you don't mind, but I added the bid history to this post. I have a feeling you are going to get some interesting answers from board members.

  • I dont think it's good... You will see a time-frame that he is giving you if it is a legit "second chance" offer... The min. they can give you is 1 day, I think they can give you 3 or 5 days also....

I really dont like the sound of this one. Anytime I got a second chance option from someone, it was more self-explanatory. Also, you should be able to accept it through ebay.com

Then he could send you an ebay invoice and you could pay through paypal... If all of the above doesnt happen, stay away.

Even if the person who is emailing you answers all your questions, it could be someone else's email or the original seller could have had his identity compromised.

  • I just checked the auction out... I am 99 percent sure it is no good and that seller has probably been hacked. I would contact the seller via "ask seller a question" link and ask him if he has been emailing you. I bet he won't know what you are talking about.

  • More research. This has to be the kicker!! This is who it came from!!

A couple of weeks ago I recieved a second chance offer, and an ebay page almost exactly like one for an auction was set, with a button to press if you wanted to follow through. Yours doesn't sound legit at all.

  • A lot of emails you will get say "don't hit respond button" or something like that. However, it WILL say, "hit the yellow button to respond" or something like that. It won't say "here is my bootleg email address please respond to that so I CAN take advantage of you."

  • When you receive a legitimate 2nd chance offer, you will also receive a link to the auction, that is available only to you, and any other bidders who were sent the offer(they would have to be bidders in the auction as well). It will have a buy it now price for the item of whatever your highest bid was. It will also appear on your my ebay page. The seller pays all ebay fees this way, and it is covered under ebay's protection(for what its worth). and as ebay says is the safer way to trade.
