  • I remember when I used to check for '72 DD Lincolns without use of a magnifying glass. Now I can't read the date on a cent without help.

    no

and its considerd the "over 40 syndrome"

I used to be able to see dates and mm's unaided, then it seems like overnight as emril would say, "BAM"

I can somewhat see them now, but only after adjusting distance between the coin and my eyes image

    thank god for the 8x

My eyes are one of the few body parts I have that work well any more. My hair was mostly gone by 19, my knee shot and rebuilt at 25, but my eyes, even at 40, are still 20/15.

Not for the last 50 to 60 years now. Didn't someone say why is youth wasted on the young?

  • Still in that youth range that allows such luxuries. In fact I'm happy to say I can read the micro printing on FRN's. I give it another 10 years and I'll be SOL.

I can see the date, steps on nickels, bands on dimes and hairlines on coins fairly easily, but only if I look under or over my glasses and hold them 2 to 4 inches away from my eye. I can't see them if I look through my glasses or if I wear contact lenses. I'm so nearsigted that I can't see anything but blurriness more than a few feet away without my glasses on though. The eye doctor told me that I have the equivalent of a 5X lens without my glasses on at about 2 inches away from my eye. It makes it fun to cherry pick for full bands or for VAMS at coin shows. Some of the dealers think I am strange when I bend down with my face almost on top of the glass of their display cases looking under my glasses though.

Perhaps the better question would be... Can you read the caption of this thread as it appears on your computer screen with your naked eye?image

Probably (never tried though) but even if I couldn't I wouldn't use a loupe. I say this because all the dealers tell us not to use a loupe because PCGS doesn't. Doesn't matter how old you are, or how your eye-sight is. So I listen to said dealers because they tell me I need to "see the forest through the trees." LMAO. And I know they're looking after my best interest when saying all this, and of course selling me a coin.

A friend, the day before yesterday, handed me a circ. '28 cent he found in change and asked me if it was an overdate, and I couldn't even tell the date. Dang, getting old is a real hassle. Had to break out the loupe, and since, I've found plenty of uses for it. image

I tend to find sufficient lighting to be more important than magnification in seeing really tiny stuff.

Yes, and I can spot an Accented Hair Kennedy at about 2-feet (you guys aren't getting enough vitamin A and D in your diet).

I'm 38 and am lucky to always have had good eyesight. I often will see a penny on the sidewalk and think to myself "Cool! A mintmarked cent!"

Great point! Your $120 loupe doesn't do you much good without decent lighting.

No problem here. Still holding on to my 20/20. Don't know for how much longer though with the amount of time I spend looking at my half dimes through a loupe. I know some say "don't use a loupe" but I'd like to see them say that while trying to attribute a 15.5mm coin image
