Global Coin Grading

Hello everyone, I am just entering the world of coin collecting and have a question on grading.

Has anyone ever heard of the coin grading company GLOBAL COIN GRADING?
I have a chance to purchase Morgan dollars graded by them, but don't know how reputable their grading is. They are now out of business and I can't find any other information on them.
Many of the dollars are graded quite high, even up to MS69, which seems too rare to be true!

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this company and coins graded by them. How does the grading compare to that done by PCGS?

I would really appreciate any information on this...THANKS!

They had a pretty short run. The only two I've had in my hands where AU $2.50 Indians. They didn't have a numerical grade, just AU. But they were both AU (one 55 and one 58) so they were correct in that respect.

Treat them as raw coins though - and don't buy any MS69's (unless you can get them for MS62 money)

I don't recall them specifically, but there was a time in the early certification days when grades 67-70 were far more liberally bestowed. It wasn't as dishonest as just where things were then. Alas, some companies still grade that way. (AU was still AU anyway.) Go with relayer's advicea and treat the coins as raw. For rare dates, use good judgment as to their authenticity too just as you would for a raw coin. Be wary and remember that bargains aren't all that common in reality. Good luck!

  • The only bargins I've had in 20 years is when the buyer didn't know what he had (certainly not ms69!!!), AND I had NO idea either that I'd get what I did. Cases in point--a rarer die state (VAM) Morgan,, and a scarcer 1894-P ($2000) in an an 1884O($15) roll bought for bullion silver price.image

  • Yes, I like their slabs. The company was started by none other than one of the co-authors of 100 Greatest Coins. Have you ever heard of Jeff Garrett? The President is now Robert Paul...fairly well known.

Global started up in Nov of 2001. It was founded by Jeff Garett and Tom Mulvaney. (Their website is out of date as neither Jeff or Tom is still with the company.) They used the old photoslabs but their photography was first rate and on the back of the phote was a couple of paragraphs about the history if the coin type.

The servce neve really too of though so to make the company successful they moved into the novelty type material widows mites, alexander the great coins, WTC tribute coins, placer gold recoveed from the SS Central America etc. Today their major product are waffled US coins. They took over from NGCas the preferred slabber by the company selling them.

Since they went into the novelty type material so quickly it is somewhat difficult to locate actual graded slabbed coins from Global.
  • thanks everyone for the advice!
