Is it just me or...

Does it bug you to see a dealer at a card show dressed up in a suit and tie? I have seen it at the National and a few of the larger shows... I mean, isn't this supposed to be more of a hobby-type business?? Who are these guys kidding. Maybe I am alone, I would like to hear your thoughts.

I think it is part of the overall "upscale" trend in business. No one wants to compete on price and value anymore, every business is trying to be considered upscale in order to charge more for the perceived value.

I am more disgusted at dealers that don't have basic grooming skills. I have actually seen dealers wear those mesh t-shirts to show off the man-boobs.

Sometimes I wonder why I started collecting.....

It wouldnt bother me if I saw a guy in a suit at a show. i think they are porbably just trying to show that they are business people by displaying a professional type atmosphere. What they probably dont realize is that most people who have been around the business for a while know the big guns of the card business and that most of them dont wear designer suits to card shows.

  • I just think it's these young bucks that don't respect the "hobby" and they are only in it for the money... We collectors have an actual "passion" for the hobby... In my opinion, a suit and tie represents a dealer who only cares about the green.

Do we all buy and sell items, probably most of us do, but we still appreciate sports memorabilia.

The funny thing is Levi Bleam, Larry Fritsch, Kit Young or even Mr. Mint all dress casually at shows. My theory is, if you are big time, you don't need to try to dress "big time."

There certainly is a happy medium between a dress suit and tie and a mesh t-shirt and man boobs......................

...I will be happy with the happy medium!

i would prefer to see a person dressed nicely. it is counter to how casual society has gotten. i love seeing those old film clips of guys with coats, ties and hats at baseball games. people wear shorts to chuch now a days. i will never disrespect someone for trying to look nice. what if were a 250 lb. woman there in a tube top vs. same woman in a nice dress?

It bugs me when a salesman wears lots of gold jewlery.

"mesh t-shirt and man boobs" would just PISS ME OFF... until no end image

Yes - I much prefer seeing ripped shorts, sneakers, Hawaiin shirts, mustard stains in their facial hair, and 'ass crack' when they bend over to check their inventory. There are at least half a dozen dealers I can think of that are so damned large, that dealing with them at an actual dealer table, I end up thinking to myself 'how many beers and hotdogs will this deal buy for him?'
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Just the opposite. Better dressed dealers at card shows would be a welcome change of pace. A large percentage of the card dealers are fat slobs who dress as if they were at the beach. In a hobby where we care so much about the appearance of our cards and the condition of our cards, it is ironic that we have these pigs who are selling them.
  • Guys... I never said I wanted to see guys dress like slobs, but suits and ties?? Come on... You aren't going to the card show to buy a wedding ring.

I guess it looks odd to me because I know these guys are doing it just to look "bigger than the hobby."

I guess I am in the minority with this opinion and that's coolimage

    Dude,
Honestly, what does it matter what the guy wears as long as he's a fair businessman? It seems a little childish to judge somebody by what they wear. Sometimes it may be a little envy or jealousy on our part that makes us jump to a prejudiced view?

I don't think it's done so that someone can look "bigger than the hobby". Some people just like to look sharp, nothing wrong with that.

  • I am not really concerned with the way that they dress.. I am just looking for the best deal. If it happens to be the guy in a suit then more power to him and vice-versa! It is all about the cards and the deal that can be made for them.

  • You're right... I guess I am just "old school" and never thought I would see the days of going to card shows at my local malls and Knights of Columbus halls change into seeing people all dressed up and selling cards out of safes etc.

I wish there were more local card shows, but as awesome as Ebay is, I think it has been a large part for the demise of these weekend get togethers for collectors.

You do not have to wear a shirt and tie however It does not hurt the image if someone dresses buisiness casual. There are some slobs out there that you can not even get close to thier table because of the stink. They look like they should be in some circus.
    Personally I never where a tie unless I am at work.No weddngs,funeral etc.NOTHING!!! NOTA!!!No way no how.

  • You guys are right though. I have seen all sorts of crazy slob dealers in my day as a collector... My favorite was some of the cases and top loaders I used to bring home from shows... I used to get old yellowed card savers etc. that stunk of cigarette smoke. That just shows you how bad smoking is for you.

You've jumped into one of the "logical" conundrums that I, as well as many have fallen into from time to time.

Syllogistic reasoning - going from the general to the specific can get one into trouble from time to time.

E.g. Hippies have long hair - Mike has long hair - thus, Mike is a hippie. Not necessarily true - there was a failure in the logic process.

Just because a guy is wearing a suit, doesn't necessarily mean he's "about the green" - ONLY.

If a guy has a suit on and has 10s of thousands in graded under the glass - they go together.

If a guy has a suit on and is especially polished, polite, accomodating, affable - they go together - looks like a good salesman to me.

People who sell us cards - i.e. - professional dealers/sellers are businesspeople and many prefer to dress accordingly. They are not about the hobby when selling - it's business at that point in time.

But, I do get where you were going/thinking. A "RAT" will smell even in a three piece suit.

    What Mike said....

These guys arent there to improve the hobby...though if they are good businessmen that is one of their service goals...but they are there to make the money. It is a business and for some, it's their living.
