Does it bug you to see a dealer at a card show dressed up in a suit and tie? I have seen it at the National and a few of the larger shows... I mean, isn't this supposed to be more of a hobby-type business?? Who are these guys kidding. Maybe I am alone, I would like to hear your thoughts.
Always collecting vintage basketball and any ABA memorabilia.

I am more disgusted at dealers that don't have basic grooming skills. I have actually seen dealers wear those mesh t-shirts to show off the man-boobs.
Sometimes I wonder why I started collecting.....
Do we all buy and sell items, probably most of us do, but we still appreciate sports memorabilia.
The funny thing is Levi Bleam, Larry Fritsch, Kit Young or even Mr. Mint all dress casually at shows. My theory is, if you are big time, you don't need to try to dress "big time."
...I will be happy with the happy medium!

Yes - I much prefer seeing ripped shorts, sneakers, Hawaiin shirts, mustard stains in their facial hair, and 'ass crack' when they bend over to check their inventory. There are at least half a dozen dealers I can think of that are so damned large, that dealing with them at an actual dealer table, I end up thinking to myself 'how many beers and hotdogs will this deal buy for him?'

I guess it looks odd to me because I know these guys are doing it just to look "bigger than the hobby."
I guess I am in the minority with this opinion and that's cool

Dude,
Honestly, what does it matter what the guy wears as long as he's a fair businessman? It seems a little childish to judge somebody by what they wear. Sometimes it may be a little envy or jealousy on our part that makes us jump to a prejudiced view?
I don't think it's done so that someone can look "bigger than the hobby". Some people just like to look sharp, nothing wrong with that.

I wish there were more local card shows, but as awesome as Ebay is, I think it has been a large part for the demise of these weekend get togethers for collectors.
Personally I never where a tie unless I am at work.No weddngs,funeral etc.NOTHING!!! NOTA!!!No way no how.

You've jumped into one of the "logical" conundrums that I, as well as many have fallen into from time to time.
Syllogistic reasoning - going from the general to the specific can get one into trouble from time to time.
E.g. Hippies have long hair - Mike has long hair - thus, Mike is a hippie. Not necessarily true - there was a failure in the logic process.
Just because a guy is wearing a suit, doesn't necessarily mean he's "about the green" - ONLY.
If a guy has a suit on and has 10s of thousands in graded under the glass - they go together.
If a guy has a suit on and is especially polished, polite, accomodating, affable - they go together - looks like a good salesman to me.
People who sell us cards - i.e. - professional dealers/sellers are businesspeople and many prefer to dress accordingly. They are not about the hobby when selling - it's business at that point in time.
But, I do get where you were going/thinking. A "RAT" will smell even in a three piece suit.

These guys arent there to improve the hobby...though if they are good businessmen that is one of their service goals...but they are there to make the money. It is a business and for some, it's their living.
