Lets Play guess the Grade and Price

Don't peek through recent auctions. 2 T206 Frank Chance Red Portraits. PSA 3 price using the T206 estimator, ( a little outdated with the surge in Vintage lately) is $120. PSA 4 price is $160. Both are common backs and clean, no paper losses and any other hidden flaw. Backs are identical. Ok, time to play. Guess the grades of each and the price, and the one you would put in your collection. I'll post the results at 11 pm cst. Let see if this flys. Sounds like fun.

    CHANCE #1 = (vG - 3)85 $ ???? image

    CHANCE #2= (GOOD-2) 45$ ???image

  • Chance #1 - 3 / $115

    Chance #2 - 3 / $150

I'd call them each a 3 - but for different reasons. I just do not like that the bottom of card#1 cuts off part of the name. But after seeing the color on #1, it makes #2 look less attractive (despite the bright bugger on his nose image ). I would take #2 even with the crease, just because of the cutoff name on #1.

Slow night I guess. Ok, heres the results.
Chance 1....Good eye Muckymutt ...PSA 4 MC final price $123.00
Chance 2....Lawnmower and Muckey hit this one pretty close too. PSA 3 $132.00

My choice...Since I'm not buying for PSA registry and strickly for image eye appeal, I chose the PSA MC. The name is still visible and I just didn't care for the crease in the bottm corner of the 3. All in all 2 pretty nice HOFer's. Soon, with the rising prices of T206,s both these will be near $250.00 each next year. Prices of 5's have tripled since June of last year. Thanks guys

I'm with you. I had both tracked and actually bid on the 4MC, but to no avail. While I do participate on the Registry, qualifiers and low grades don't bother me much as long as the image quality is there. Registration is probably my top criterion followed closely by color.

Yawnie, Sorry to out bid you on that 1. I followed both and saw the 3 end so high that I uped my snipe on this one. I figured the 4 would end in the $145 range if the 3 ended at $132. But was pleasantly suprised in the end. Off topic..You must be watching the hugh prices HOF 5's are bringing? $650-$900 !! Commons in 5 all the way up to $450. Last year in June when I started this set, common 5's went for 125-175 routinely and HOFer's 250-300. I'm glad I picked up 5 or 6 commons in the $75 range. I can't compete there any more and happy 4's have remained under $50. I still pick up any thing with eye appeal from 2-4, but by next year i'm afraid 4's will be in the 75-100 range.

I know. It's insane. I started buying T206's about fall 2004. I used to be able to pick up 3's for $25 or less and 4's for under $40 fairly regularly. Now it's very tough to find 3's for under $32 and I'm seeing more and more common 4's top $50 or even $60. Some of that may have to do with the scarcity rankings in Scott Reader's PDF book, but a lot of it just seems to be the progression of the market.

I, too, have been virtually priced out of PSA 5's, though every now and then I get lucky on raw purhcases and land 5's on my own submissions. Like you said, I can see myself being driven out of the market for 4's by this time next year. I hope not, but I don't see the set becoming any less popular over time.

And speaking of Scott Reader, I have an Excel file of his front-back checklist if you want it. Bill Brown actually sent me the file a few months ago, but I changed it a bit so that it corresponds to Scott's checklist of possibilities. E-mail me if you would like me to send it to you.

I also asked Scott for a copy of his book from the Net54 board. I really didn't check out the checklist closely. I'm still using MLBVintage.com T206 Value Estimator for my pricing information. Of course with this boom HOFer's and SLer's are a little out dated. But you get the idea for back front and grade combinations. I'm concentrating on putting the portrait set together first and back filling, unless I find a really good buy. I bought a GAI 4 Sunday for $35...They do come up, but I lose 7 auctions for evey one I win. Usually my snipes are passed before its time to bid. Need any help or you just wanta talk about T206's e-mail me. Joe
