1918 Buffalo nickel--pretty in pink

A very nice, if not extraordinary, Buffalo nickel that almost glows in the dark. The reverse is especially pleasing. I like this kind of toning--light, pale, irridescent. It has a very natural look to it.

It's defintley upper crust in the 1918 camp.

The strike is right on everywhere......and I must say everywhere but the knot and hair.

This is why 1918 "hammered" Buffs are tough. The entire mintage had problems of one sort or the other.

The strike is way better than about 75% of the mintage.....central obverse details are just terrible
on this coin. Some even look flat as a pancake in the center, but sharp as heck everywhere else.

Still a nice specimen, though. WAY better than average.

    Hope this helps..........

Thanks Pete. I figure it's fairly high grade but you really drew a bead on it by comparing it other 1918s.

The Lange book notes weakness in the central obverse and reverse. He says most 1918s have almost no definition at all in the knot above the braid.

So, if I have a nice specimen technically, I take the eye-appeal end as a bonus. MS64?

The coin looks like a nice 64 to me. I love the toning and have seen but a handful of 1918 pieces that are that attractive over the course of time. Good job! image

Guy, I agree with Hoot and thought the same as him

    before reading his post.

64 should be right for that specimen.
