speared bison

will other die cracks be as valuable as this one? I have a couple hundred ocean in view with a crack going diagonally through the (1) on the 1805 date on the reverse, as well as the (m) in america. I understand a die crack adds little preimium, however on the coins only minted once it seems any little error goes through the roof?

Only if you can come up with a catchy title and convince one of the TPGs to recognize it.

With the anomaly from shewhowillnotbenamed, the name came from right here on the forum. True story. Other suggestions were buffalo-bob, bison-on-a-stick, etc. You may be sure that we rue the day, but as to your situation, if we can see it, you never know. Catchy name, then a good Dallas PR firm, and we'll be able to say we knew you when...

First of all, the speared bison is not a die crack. It is a die gouge-big difference. The die crack on your coin is just that, a die crack. It, in my opinion, is not worth thinking up a name for or sending to Coin World for some attribution. The Speared Bison variety's popularity is because of the prominent location and size of the gouge. Much like the Wounded Eagle Sac dollar.

There are plenty of the other die gouges in various coin series that do not get this sort of attention because they are either too small, or not in an important location on the coin. For example, several die gouges exist on many Morgan dollars. Many bring little to no premium. However, on the 1921S Morgan dollars, if you are lucky enough to find a VAM 1Bx, then you've got it made. The VAM 1Bx series is the thornhead series of gouges. There are eight die states. Some worth more than others, but all worth many multiples that a regular coin would bring.

I thank you for your help, again I understand that a die crack does not increase the value of a coin, however A one coin mint with a error, never to be made again, seems to send prices through the roof? check your change and see if you can find one. will this make it a collectable?

  • Coin World, PCGS, NGC and a few others helped inflate this junk find. If they did not recognize this coin as a variety, then nobody would have any interest in the broke back Bison.

I never took the time with searching thru the 04's, but Ive been thru hundreds of 05's and all the die crack/wack clamor is a very common find

find one with a die crack on the obv, you can call it "jefferson on crack"

  • Somehow, I don't think die cracks in the 2005 nickels will make anyone rich. I purchased a $100 box of bank roll OIV nickels - over 50% had die cracks (of the types seen in the first 3 photos). The last roll I cracked open had only 12 that did not have a die crack and the rest did. I also found many others in US Mint issued rolls (the other photos).

To me, these are as interesting as the "Speared Bison". They are a nice novelty and do command a small premium (just as the speared bison should have). As I said, I have hundreds of the 2005 nickels with die cracks and I've used them as a free bonus in selling nickel sets -- and it has worked well for that purpose. I also sold an 11 coin lot of different types of die crack/cud nickels and ended up getting an average of 60 cents each. So I guess that is what they are worth.

Very interesting, I went through two rolls and found 29, one crack through the #1 and one ( looks like the spear on the bison) on the M in america. yes I have $100.00 boxes with cracks all through them also. However none like the mint boxes. I feel the crack through the date is very appealling
