Private Feedback

I'm looking at a coin which seems undervalued but the user has private feedback on the bay of E.

I'm a bit wary of this as only 10 positive feedbacks were left over the last 12 months.

How should I approach this ?

The coin is slabbed in the old PCGS slabs.

Private feedback might just mean he buys items he doesn't want the general public to know about.

Steve, you're biased, I've seen very honest Chinese sellers with private feedback. image

  • Well funily enough the address is China, Ireland.

I have mailed to ask whether it is actually China or Ireland.

I'd rather not provide a link as I may well want to bid on the item ( I'd be most happy to post it afterwards though ). image

Have no fear, the one person who used to collect ZAR coins left two years ago.

  • Ha ha - it might not be a ZAR coin after all, but then again - it may well be. image

Who was the person that used to collect ZARs ?
  • I would pass it.

I would stay far away. In my mind, private feedback is a license for sellers to commit fraud. Period. If you're that concerned about the neighbors knowing about your buying sex toys and latex, then create a second Ebay userID, one for buying and one for selling. Ebay allows this.

Bottom line: Sellers with private feedback have something to hide.
  • OK - I have checked with a knowledgable person who told me to stay away so I will provide the link.......just for you ajaan. image

Take a look at this one LINK

Same coin, same pics, and different seller (I would bet that neither seller owns the coin).

Should the others be reported to Ebay ?

    1. Private feedback
    2. Low feedback
    3. Located in China
    4. Fake slabs coming out of China.

Glad you ran. I would have.

$5 says that both above referenced sellers are from a "pool" of 10 newly-created UserIDs who all have obtained their 10 feedback by "selling" to one another. And since you cannot see the feedback you can't tell.

There's a LOT of bitterness over the whole Ebay China business over on the Ebay Seller boards. Because Ebay wants to make inroads into China, Chinese sellers get free fees and stores for the first 3 years. So the other Ebays are being polluted with scams and garbage originating in China...
  • Well - thanks for all your help guys, appreciated.

I've written to Ebay, let's see if I get a response.

    Oh, two other truisms:

    1. Don't *ever* count on Ebay actually doing anything about auctions you report, no matter how flagrant or fraudulent the infractions seem.

    2. Don't ever expect anything but an automated response to any communication with Ebay.

Seriously now, did you really think, even for a second, that an SS Central America double eagle would have sold for below melt and with zero bidders so far?

As for the "others", I'll bet he's the same person, who also stole the text of the auctions of the real seller .

  • Intersting to see a Private Feedback person retracting their bid.

    Retraction

I got an automated reply from Ebay last night let's see if a real person contacts me. image
  • Am I reading too much into this ?

    This
  • I see the same person won both 'fake' auctions.

    2nd Fake Auction

    A 'syndicate' member ?

Edit: Just to point out that the 'winner' only has two feedbacks - one of which is no longer a registered user.

It could be that mike115258 is someone who represents the real owner, and he's ensuring that no one gets scammed.

P.S. Ebay does not contact people who report problems; even if they take action

  • I have received a written Email from Ebay saying that the problem has been looked into. They didn't go into detail on how the problem was fixed ( Mike ? ) but the letter was signed by an actual name. image)

Anyhow thanks to everyone that looked into this ( especially Steve ). As a team we can foil them !!!!

That's a surprise, in the past they just said it would be looked into and they would take action if necessary, but they wouldn't notify the person who reported the problem. So your only recourse was to wait and see if the auction was cancelled.

  • I received a mail last night saying that they'd look into it ( a computer generated mail ) but the personal reply came from Ebay Ireland. Since they have only recently started up I assume that Ebay Ireland has more time on it's hands then say Ebay USA which has been established for much longer.

BTW I checked the sellers that were selling the 1857-S DE and they are still listed.
  • on the original auction - the PCGS label on the slab is a fake - PCGS never produced a label such as that... also, wasn't either NGC or ICG the slab of choice for the gold coins from the shipwreck???

But you can click on the "(Private)" link for the score, and at least see the real numeric score. One of these guys got all his feedback in the last month, and the other in the last six months. image

I see nothing wrong with that label. What is it that makes you think it is fake? And PCGS WAS the services of choice for the SS Central America coins. NGC was the service of choice for the SS Republic coins. PCGS was also the service for the SS Brother Jonathan coins. ICG was the service for the Goodacre dollars.

I note that both of the sellers from China have been NARUed.

PCGS did use a gold label for the Central America coins and was the service that graded most/all of them.

However i'm sure that they'll reappear with different names and different scams.
  • I have just received another Email written by an Ebay member telling me that the appropriate action was taken and thanking me for keeping Ebay a safe place.

Looks like they have a good follow up system / policy.

Sounds like eBay might be getting a little better about dealing with this sort of thing. You are to be commended for taking the time to do the right thing and expose this.image
