1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Error or ???

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with this Lincoln Cent? Notice that the tops of both 5's are collapsed down to the middle of the five, although the first 5 is more distinguishable. I have attached a couple of images and will attempt to post more...

Thanks for any help that can be given!!

Oops! Not memorial - its a wheat. DOH!

I think that's damage caused by a counting machine.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    I agree, counting machine error.

What would be interesting is a 1955 Lincoln MEMORIAL cent.

When I saw the title, I thought hmmm. something interesting, you may want to take memorial out of the title.

The first photos appear to show a slight doubling on the last 5 which is a sign of what is known as a Poor Man's Double Die. That means it is not really a double die but a 55 that was made from worn dies. However, they do sell for a few dollars pending condition as a novelty or something to stick in that stupid slot in the albums. The other deformities look like someone tried to eat that thing. Post Mint damage I would say.

  • Thank you! I wasn't sure, because it looks like all the wear on the coin seems to be consistent with the damage being there since minting.
