A couple of newps from todays local show, guess the grades times *congrats to Braddick*

I picked these up at a monthly local show, both are raw so any grade could be the correct one.image The lines you see on the last rev are some dog hairs that I did'nt see before I took the pic.

Edited to add: Congrats to Pat, he was the first to see that this 1881-S has been polished and whizzed to create a nice looking DMPL to an unsuspecting collector. I bought it and posted it here as an educational piece for others to see.

I can't really grade the first coin from the image. Some combination of the picture and the toning. The '81S looks 65 DMPL.

Sorry, I think the 81-S is altered with fake frost.
I've owned these before (just recently sold one on eBay- ANACS Net holdered) and all the 'tells' are there.

Here's one that didn't fool ANACS:
    image

The 'tells' here are NO frost on the lettering (especially the reverse). Also missing frost on the eagle's wing tips.

Also, see the ghosting around the stars?
This one has either been polished or plated prior to the frost (of which is either applied or is whizzed on).

    I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

That was my first thought, too.

    I hope we're both wrong...Mike

Great job of sniffing it out Pat, its amazing how good this coin looks to an uninformed collector. I've seen these graded by one of the junk slab companies and sold on ebay before.image

    Chris,
I was about to simply not post as the thread appeared to be one of those "happy talk" threads (no doing on your part) but I thought about it and it bugged me not to say anything, so I did.

I'm glad it turned out the way it did instead of you sending me a nasty PM telling me to mind my own business...
(Yes, I've received a couple of those in the past...)

    <<First one: AT>>

Nope, endroll type toining but not AT. The toining is laying naturaly and while not a spectacular example its NT all the way.

  • First coin is NT, nice strike, MS-63, maybe 64.

The 81-S is a nice learning aid image
