Any experience with CCGS grading and eBay seller Howardsdirect?

Tonight I made my weekly trip through eBay auctions for Barber dimes which might upgrade my set. Most of what I need for an upgrade is now AU, and not frequently found on eBay (which, not surprisingly, is full of AG-VG Barbers). However, I noticed that a couple I needed were offered by Howardsdirect, in Leipsic, OH. The name is familiar to anyone reading the classified ads in Coin World.

A search on this forum showed that members have had good experiences buying coins in reputable slabs from Howardsdirect on eBay, but some questioned this sellers affinity to third world holders. Currently, they are selling their raw coins in Coin World holders with a logo that says CCGS. Their pictures are too tiny to let me guess which problems are not mentioned, or how generous their grading is. I note that they often price an AU at Coin Values/Trends for an XF. Their selection is good (for eBay), and they offer a 10 day return privilege, but I wonder 1) what is the likelihood that their self-slabbed coins have problems keeping them out of better holders, and 2) if anyone here has examined "CCGS" coins in person?

  • I have. Bought two from them..both gold dollars. types 1 and 3 in MS grades. one turned out to be cleaned. both were AU 58's and not MS. I simply called them and said I'd bre sending them back and I got my refund 1 day after my coins reached them. I was pretty happy with the service but, it's hit or miss with the coins.

CCGS is nothing more than a made up name for a Coin World slab. It is no different than buying a coin raw. Simply ignore the holder and grade the coin as if it were raw.

  • I have only this for input, since that particular seller is on my "not now, not ever" list:

He has remarkably variable photographic ability, especially with the CCGS stuff. Some of it is crystal clear, and some has obviously been run through a Photoshop filter. Why, do you suppose, would identical slabs shot under obviously identical conditions (the lighting is always the ame, for instance) differ so widely in photographic quality?

Answer: He's hiding something with some of them. I, for one, don't intend to find out what he's hiding.

Thanks for the input so far. Yes I knew that CCGS is just a Coin World holder for raw coins. Unfortunately I can't grade accurately by his posted pictures. So far the only good picture of a coin from this seller is a harshly cleaned gold dollar. Anyone else?

I did buy one coin long ago and it was returned as I felt his grade was a bit optimistic.

It's worse than raw. It's someone with an agenda to deceive.

You have at least 2 reasons to pass:
    1. Bogus slab
    2. Bad pix

They had a 1916-D dime with a bullethole in it slabbed as a VG-8, no mention of damage. It's one tiny step ahead of me writing "MS66" with a felt tip marker on every Morgan in a 2x2 that I buy.

No experience with CCGS slabs. Bought one coin from Howardsdirect - an ANACS EF45 1879CC Morgan dollar. Had a big whack on the cheek that the photo somehow failed to disclose.

Returned for a no-hassle refund. The coins you get might not be great, but they were very prompt and courteous about the refund.
