I found a 1884 CC Pinned Wing VAM in a GSA Holder! New Pics added of obverse Die Spikes and Double C

I saw a thread here talking about the 1884 CC Pinned Wing Vam, so I took a look at the 84 CC I have in an GSA graded MS 63* and low and behold I found the Pinned Wing variety!

Here is a pic of the gouge:

Anybody know if this adds any value to the coin yet?

Scott

Is there anything else on the coin to look for other than the die gouge?

  • The normal attributions for the VAM-4 is on page 261 of the VAM Encyclopedia by Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis.

The attribution for the VAM-4 is as follows:

    III² 4 · C³ (Spiked Date) (177) denticles I-2 (Interest) R-4 (Rarity)

Obverse III² 4 - There is a vertical spike of metal from the top of the 1 in the date. Some specimens show a horizontal spike to the left of the lower loop of the first 8. A thin die break line shows below the designer's initial M. The third star on the left has a hook at the bottom of the date digits.

The reverse should be the C³ type with V (large) CC mint mark.

If you have different Obverse markers, let me know.

You should also look for any clashing on the coin as certain clashed letters on anyMorgan dollar can make a coin more interesting and desirable.

Here are pics of the spiked date the 1 and the first 8.
Has the small die break by the M (hard to photo in the GSA holder)
I think I see the hook under the star.
Light Die Cracks around the Stars on both obverse and reverse.

    It has Large CC

  • When looking for clashed letters, you have to look real hard for any slight portions of lettering.

Forum member Morganvamclashie has a book out for "Super CD" (Clashed Die) variety coins which include TOP 100 and Hot 50 CD variety coins.

Here is a screen snapshot of a Clashed Die Tool I made to determine clashed lettering and Clashed Die rotations. This is the normal 0 degree die positioning.

MAD4MORGANS: I think that you have the eagle facing in the wrong direction in your previously posted Clashed Die Tool.

The correct alignment should have that typically clash evident "<"-shaped notch at the back of Miss Liberties head, immediately to the left of the first star below the "M" in Unum on the obverse, correctly positioned on the reverse within the open area between the inside of the wreath and the eagle's left (viewers right) wing.

The bridge of Miss Liberty's nose should then be positioned in the corresponding area on the reverse within the open area between the inside of the wreath and the eagle's right (viewers left) wing.

  • No Stuart the image alignments are correct.

I have added a colorized version of the obverse and also a reverse drawing to clarify the correct positioning.

I think you didn't see "through" the coin in you orignal take on the overlay.

I guess it can't be too rare a variety as my lone 84-CC is the same one. Unless I got lucky... Maybe it's only on the obversly rainbow toned CC morgans. Mine's in an old NGC 63 slab. Ray

Found two pinned wing in My GSA 84's
Spiked 1 and very little die crack on 8
No obv and very slight rev clashes
  • Smittys pretty much described my 84 CC

I look'd at my 82 CC and it is double pinned a couple of feathers down from the spot on the 84 CC's

I don't see any pinned wings on my 85 CC but it's hard to tell on that one....To me it looks like it was struck from a recently polished
pitted or rusted die. Pretty much has die stratches, gouges and pitting around alot of the letters and some of the stars.

I think the CC mint was a little rough on the Eagle image

Just think what they would have done to the Beaver image
