Which state(s) are most of the coin collectors from?

After posting my thread on "who's going to the Santa Clara show", it sure seems like there are a lot of collectors in California. Where would you say has the highest concentration of coin collectors in the U.S.? image

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that my home state of Maine is not home to the largest group of collectors. Just a hunch.

I would say that the number of collectors per state is directly proportional to the population of each state.

    California has the most collectors
    Wyoming has the fewest collectors.

I would guess that California is #1. Texas or Florida probably #2

New York and Pennsylvania I would say have to be somewhere in the top 10. Michigan might be in the top 10 but the dismal economy
in this state I'm sure has taken a toll on the number of collectors.

A better question would be which state has the most collectors on a per capita basis. In terms of absolute numbers, the states with the largest populations would obviously have the most collectors.

  • Indianapolis has a lot of collectors, but for a major city (11th largest), we never have a major show of any kind. Usually chicago or columbus oh. But, there are a few good dealers here to make up for that.
    How much for that one

A lot of my Ebayed coins end up going to Florida. I've always thought they were near the top of the list.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
  • Vermont.

There are tons of collectors here. This board alone has at least 3 members from this state. Not bad when the 2000 census estimated the overall population at 1,136.

Probably the state with the highest population, diz.

There are still a lot of collectors in Michigan, many of them retirees. The future for collecting in Michigan, however, looks grim, as I expect to see much of the younger population leave due to poor job prospects. This state may soon look like a giant Anderson, Indiana. The leadership in Michigan is dismal.

I am from California and have sold over a thousand coins on ebay only 10 or so go to California where the rest goes elsewhere in the country. #1 is Florida, #2 NY, I would have to go through my records to get a breakdown of everywhere else. I have hit about 30 different states in that 1000 coins.

    Based on e-bay deliveries:

Most of my items ship out to:

    California
    Florida
    New York
    Washington
    Virginia
    Michigan
    Minnesota
    Arizona

Being in North Carolina I have very few sales in NC, In fact last year I did not have a single coin delivered in state. This year there has only been 2 so far.

Click the "Go Frap Yourself" link in my sig for a map of where coin collectors are from.
  • In addition to population, other influential factors could be:

    1. age- more retirees in FL
    2. wealth- disposable income greater in CA, NY. FL etc.
    3. weather- indoor activities more common in colder climates
