More Auctions Gripes

The signal to noise ratio has gotten so bad for the stuff I'm collecting, so maybe I'm being too prissy - but here are some gripes. image

1. Sellers who make up their own grading scales. Learning Beckett and PSA is tough enough, my brain can't take another scale. If you have any doubt, a general description or (better) a good scan will suffice.

2. Card lots without numbers. Please give me at least SOME idea of the numbers. I take the time to list my lots (all of 5 minutes using Excel and a 10 key pad), it helps when sellers do the same for set-building fanatics like me.

3. The micro-scan and the "see scan for condition" comment. This isn't Blade Runner: I can't blow up an image and get detailed information out of it too.

4. "Huge Lot of 1970 - Present" lots - Which usually have 1 banged up old common and a bunch of recent crap.

5. Grab bag lots which state something like "Cards you receive may or may not be present in scan" - Some might like these but I sure don't. If I don't know what I'm buying, I don't buy it.

6. PSA Graded cards without qualifiers mentioned in title (often appearing only in the scan) - There is a difference between a PSA 9 and a PSA 9 (OC). That's an oldie but I still run into it all the time.

Any others?

  • I feel your pain! I just received 10 Goudey Gum 1933ish cards rated good . Most still had mud caked on the card from soaking in it, multiple punch and pin holes as well as tears to go with the creases! Not good! Very poor!image
My focus, 1970 Topps Baseball Raw and Graded, pre 1989 PSA Hockey and 1933 INDIAN GUM ! Yikes!!

You have to admit, that would be pretty cool if you could.

I agree, I am sick of reading about psa graded 9's and then reading halfway down the page or having to see the oc on the label.

I do love the '1959 to 1990' auctions. If I ever bid on one slap me.

My only real problem--and it's not one that's going to go away, so I might as well not even grouse about it-- is dealers overgrading raw cards. I really don't mind when an amateur does this; they don't know, and it can just be an honest mistake. But with dealers its another thing entirely. I just received a 'mint' 500 ct. box of 1978 football from a dealer where 25% of the lot was heavily creased and 65% was EXMT-NMT. Maybe 10% is NMT-MT, although I don't think there was a single mint card in the lot.

creased cards as mint is pretty bad.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

using the term PSA when it is graded by another company or worse not graded at all.

as mentioned the hidden OC is another pet peeve. do they think that someone is going to have respect for them when they find out. it's not the buyer is going to say, "oh well centered or not let the bidding begin, it make no difference to me"

but this one is my personal favorite:
    1966 Billy Williams

it has been on E-Bay for at least 5 straight months. each time the auction ends it is back up again. there is a %20 additional fee and the card starts anywhere from $100-$300. the seller has terrible feedback. for a while he had the wrong scan of the card on there.

when he says it is OC he is not kidding.
  • I am not too picky when it comes to condition, so I look at all kinds of cards. I am always surprised how many listings for PSA (MK) cards do not include a back scan, when that is the side with the mark. I know I am desperate, but at least let me see what was drew the qualifier.

I like the buyer's premium that he's going to tack on at the end.

Ebay must drool over these guys.
  • How bout when they put in the title, "PSA READY!" or "PSA WORTHY"

Just takes up space on my searches

But you touched on the worst one of all. "PSA 8!!", just to find out is PSA 8 OC. HATE THAT!!! image
To any seller who does that, I will never buy from you just for that one principle. It loses all credibility with me. If you put "Carew PSA 8 OC", anybody who searches PSA 8, it will still pop up. That is cool, but for me to click on it & then find out it is OC, fugedaboutit!! image
Orioles cards from 1960 to today.

    Be good my brothers.

I hate these, as I mentioned before in another thread.

    Aaron PSA 8

This one is the best. Says PSA 8 in the title. Says PSA 8 in the description. At the end of the description says, "not graded".

Really just trying to dupe someone who is new or in a hurry.
