PVC damage to proof coin

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with old proofs, 1930's that have PVC damage. How did they package them back in the '30's and are they subject to PVC? Thanks for your response.

  • I think from '36 to about '54 proofs came in little cellophane packets that were stapled together. These didn't cause PVC damage. If the coins were stored in a PVC containing flip they could pick up PVC. If it isn't too bad I've heard acetone can help. I've also seen a coin store owner use a solvent labeled PVC remover though I've read here that some people say that is bad stuff for coins. Personally I would send a PVC damaged, valuable, coin to NCS which is a company that specialized in conserving coins.
  • Thanks for the reply, that will help.
