1984 Topps cards in 2006 Topps racks, fresh off the press?

I was just at target today and saw a bunch of 2006? Topps rack packs. 15 cards, 3 being advertised as "vintage". Well, each of the racks had at least one of the "vintage" cards was showing, 1984 Topps commons. Hmm. Funny thing is, the "vintage" cards look pretty clean. Too clean. Normally, with early 80s topps issues, you'll see a lot of edge issues caused by the cutting blade. In all of the racks with a 1984 showing, the card was georgous. Centered perfectly, rich colors, nice, crisp edges and corners.

It made me wonder, is Topps printing up a new batch of "vintage" cards using the newer presses, or did they have a bunch of extra stock laying around from 20 years ago? Or maybe they called up Steve over at BBCE and bought a few rack cases. image What do ya'll think?

I can't believe they'd go to the trouble of printing up various year's common cards just for a rack-pack when for about .001% of the cost you can buy a a few thousand singles of each year from any halfway decent dealer or even collector. Looking at mid-80s registry sets it appears there are lots of cards out there that are "too clean."

I got one that was pretty beat up. I also got some duplicates. What are the odds?

I didn't buy any of the racks. I spent my card money on a few packs of 2006 Heritige instead. Got a Billy Wagner refractor. image

I just wondered, since Topps so closely guards their print-runs as secrets. They won't even reveal the print run of old 50s or 60s cards. Makes me wonder what they're protecting. It wouldn't take much to pull an "Upper Deck" (when they allegedly printed thousands of 1989 Griffeys back in the 90s to give to their VIPs).

I bought one rack the other day, received 2-84s and 1-82 in it cards were in NM-M shape.

If Topps ever went out on the market and bought up raw vintage cards, resealed them in replica wrappers based on their respective years - i.e. 1968 raw in 1968 replica wrappers - and sold them on the open market, they would make an absolute guaranteed killing. Combining the gambling element with the pockets of baby boomers = FORTUNE.
