Show Report: Baystate Coin Show, Boston, MA

On a most beautiful Friday afternoon (really, the weather was incredible here) I hit Beantown right when my last class was over, which gave me just under three hours at the Baystate Show before I had to return to campus. I knew they'd be my only three hours at the show, so I had to make the most of them--I resigned myself to the realization that I was likely not going to be able to make much chit-chat, which is a highlight of every show, in order to get some coins.

Right when I arrived, I saw Darin Whittaker's (BigD5) table. I immediately went over to exchange some friendly greetings, and while there, ran into Nick Chabot, whom I had been waiting to meet (more on him later). Before leaving Darin's table, I had three mint set toned Lincolns (lots of GREEN image) and went on my merry way to scan the show. My first pass was pretty uneventful, as very little material really caught my eye. A few dealers had some toned pieces, and I scanned them but really didn't find too much. I looked at a few pieces, but most I didn't even ask a price on, as they didn't have a look that I would have really wanted.

As always, my main focus was toned coinage and type pieces. The type I was looking for was mainly a mid-grade UNC large cent--I have two MS62s that I'd like to use to trade up for one higher grade piece; a Randall Hoard coin would really be the ultimate goal, but we'll see when I find a coin I really want to own. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of coppers that fit the bill--some that weren't high grade enough, and then many more that were too rich for my blood. As I walked into the larger of the two main rooms (the show is almost a circle with two "main" bourses, and then an aisle connecting them, and two conference rooms, all with tables--kind of weird) I finally ran into the person I was really aiming to see for the show, Nick Chabot. We've chatted quite a bit on the boards, but he only started going to my local shows once I left NJ, so we've never met.

Now for some praise. Of all the dealers at the show, I've got to say some of the most eye appealing coins were Nick's--he's really got an eye for attractive pieces, and I can't really say that I didn't like anything he had (apart from one coin that was discussed at length over an issue simply regarding differing tastes). Anyway, he made sure to show me two new three cent silvers that he had just gotten--one blue, and one with a rainbow target. Three cent silvers have always had a place in my heart since I first got one (back when $20 was expensive) and this coin was just too attractive to pass up. We chatted a little bit, and I had Nick hold the coin so I could write a check if I spent my cash elsewhere at the show (with a dealer who didn't know me). With nothing really of interest on the rest of the bourse, I made a second round to try to find more pieces.

I scrutinized the table of a dealer who had mostly toned pieces, and ran into an interesting one--a 1937-D Lincoln in NGC MS67BN with some rich blue on the obverse, and a blue crescent (like a Morgan crescent) on the bottom 20% of the coin. I thought the coin was neat--and marvelously clean--so I bought it. The other tables, as in the first run, didn't produce anything noteworthy, so it was back to Nick where I shot the breeze, noting that my time was dwindling. While at Nick's table, Greattoning was also there ready to discuss what we all love best--color. That meant time for show-and-tell on my side, and I pulled out the one box of coins that I had brought with (I don't have much here--mostly just a few things for sale and what's come since I last went home). Nick managed to pull out three coins that he wanted to buy, and I got to use my favorite words... "not for sale" image I need to make it more clear what's in my collection in the future image

Anyway, Nick and I had quite a good conversation, and I got to take a closer look at what he had--one incredible coin was an NGC MS65 20c with an astounding rainbow reverse--perhaps Tradedollarnut's signature coin (EDIT: old sig coin) is a little more impressive in color, but it's a similar pattern. The obverse was gorgeously original, as well, and that coin would be mine if it were in my budget. If it's something that interests you, I strongly suggest you PM him now; I have no doubt that it'll be gone quickly in Baltimore. For what my opinion's worth, it's the nicest coin of the type I've ever seen. Anyway, before paying for the 3CS, I pulled out a proof IHC of his, and, well, found another buy. Exceptional blue on the obverse with lighter, multiple colors on the reverse. Really a beauty to behold, and I couldn't pass it up. Now, Nick was paid in cash AND a check image

By then I had to run to get back to school, and I left with a smile on my face. Although there wasn't much in my interest area, what was in my area was nice stuff, and I bought some really nice pieces that I'm happy to have acquired. I'll try to post pictures in the next few days.

Jeremy

PS- So it seems like this really is a plug thread, let me give my true vote of confidence to Nick. I'll be honest that I didn't know what to expect since he let me know how young he was (a few years on top of me), but after meeting him, he's earned my trust and respect--if he's got something that interests you, you can be quite sure it's a nice coin and accurately described.

I've heard consistently good things about that Nick kid. I believe he will be in Baltimore. I will put him on the Longacre "must see" list.

I was at the show saturday. The attendance was apparently satisfactory and several dealers I spoke to reported brisk sales. I believe there were more dealers in attendance than there were last year.
