Questions about plats

I have the last three years of plats from the USMint in OGP. (Learning the lingo here)
I was looking at the prices on PCGS and see that they have two categories - Regular Strikes and Proofs.

My question is what is the difference? I know the difference for coins such as the quarters and such, but I figured all Eagles Gold, Silver or Platinum would be proofs.

Once again - I am sure it is a newbie question, and I appreciate your reply and patience.

Look at your coins. If you can see yourself in their reflection like a mirror then they are proofs. If not then they're mint state coins.

Yep, that's a can't-fail test for the modern eagle series.
  • How do you know which you are buying from the mint?

should say somewhere in the description. Proof or Mint State (Brilliant Uncirculated)

    Proof costs more.
  • Ok, does the USMint web site stink that bad. There is no designation for proof or mint state when purchasing.
There is no price choice. Is it because they are considered bullion?

  • I don't think you can purchase anything but the Proof Eagles from the Mint.

You can only purchase proof coins from the mint. They do not sell uncirculated platinum, silver, or gold coins to "unlicensed" individuals. That basically means that you have to be a big time coin dealer, or be able to purchase a VERY large quantity at one time in order for the mint to sell you the uncirculated coins.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
