Question about NTC graded coins....

drddmdrddm Posts: 5,379 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone ever buy NTC graded coins and then send them IN THEIR HOLDER to PCGS for crossover? What grade(s) have they come back? Or are they body bagged. Just curious.

I ask this because I am watching a couple of NTC graded coins on ebay in MS66 holders that look really nice but I am VERY hesistant about bidding as I have NEVER bought any coins other than PCGS or NGC.

The seller's name on eBay is - simplycoins!

Anyone ever buy his coins and send them in to PCGS?

Thanks for your help

The only times I've ever sent in NTC coins (three Mint State Morgans), I broke 'em out and sent them in raw. They all came back one grade lower, which was exactly what I expected.
    When in doubt, don't.

You're very lucky that they weren't cleaned, cloroxed, A/T, or otherwise abused.

I've crossed 2 NTC coins into PCGS but I cracked them first to remove any bias.

The first was a 1923 Peace in NTC 66 which I won at auction from simplycoins for $78. I cherrypicked the coin as a VAM 1V Extra Hair. The coin came back in PCGS MS65, a finest known at the time I sold it, eBay auction #8373500554.

The second was a 1887-S Morgan in an NTC MS63 slab for $68. I cherrypicked that coin as VAM 2 TOP 100 S/S which came back in PCGS MS62 and subsequently sold for $225 on eBay, auction #8373526422.

A 1 point drop in grade is more than acceptable in my opinion.

In my opinion, as long as you are knowledgable in the series, know how to grade, and the seller has a reasonable return policy & decent feedback, there's no risk.

Or, you could just keep buying plastic instead of actual coins. Either way, I'll keep looking at the green holders and cashing in. image
  • I sent an 1845 5 dollar gold piece that was graded MS64 NTC to NGC and it came back MS63. I actually didn't think it would come back above MS61. So I guess I am one of the lucky ones.

  • You have to look at the coin not the holder.

I've found some sweet coins in SEGS, PCI, and NTC holders.

I haven't cracked them out or sent them in but I'm happy with them.

I would consider them a grade or two lower if not seeing them in person. image

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!! image

    Freak,

Did you send that NTC coin to PCGS in the NTC holder or did you crack it first?

This "buy the coin, not the holder" mantra is all well and good. However, the vast majority of these garbage slabs are sold on eBay, which is essentially a sight-unseen purchase even with images - which we all know can be very deceptive. Sure, if you're careful you may ocassionally get lucky. I've done it myself. But, consuming a regular diet of this junk will unquestionably prove costly in the long run.

I sent it to NGC cracked out. I was nervous about NTC holder.
