So Billy, when that number is looked up, it will show your Crawford number cross referenced?

You know, this next purported volume was going to be half dimes and up, right? Looks like they better get going on volume one again if all the smaller denomination numbers are changing from 4th ed, vol 1.

Still wondering why the new numbering system was necessary.

The new FS numbers have been utilized by NGC quite some time now. I can only reference NGC, I don't know about other TPGs. The above 2004 DDR 1c FS-2004-801 I had slabbed about 8 months ago.

All the smaller denominations FS numbers have been converted to the new FS numbers system. There is a file that a few have that show the conversion from old FS to new FS. That's about all I can say about it.

I agree it can create confusion -- as already happening right here in this thread. What can I say -- it's J.Ts system.

In my soon-to-be published Die Variety News newsletter I will include all known available cross-references, I.E. new FS#, CONECA #, Wexler # and so forth for the varieties that are in that particular newsletter. If interested for more information about what the Die Variety News newsletter is all about, just PM me.

Thanks for the info. I meant when the new FS number is looked up, in the FS reference book (?), will it cross reference to your Crawford number, or CONECA's number, etc, or do you know?

This is of course assuming anyone will want to know what the new FS numbers refer to.

  • The new FS #, as far as I know, doesn't cross-reference to other filing systems such as CONECA or my "C" number, etc.

The FS-2004-801 you see annotated on the NGC slab above is obviously from the new system that NGC has been utilizing for about a year now. The "801" is derivative from the 800 series representing reverse with the "1" meaning doubled die. Therefore, 801 = DDR. Another one is the 2004P Peace Medal DDO. It is listed as FS-2004P-101. The 100 series represents obverse with the "1" being for doubled die. Therefore, 101 = DDO. There's a 200, 300, 400, 500, and so on series each representing a certain type of variety, I.E. RPM, OMM, MPD, clashed dies, etc., etc. Speaking for myself, I liked the FS-xxx.xx better. Whatever I guess ...

There you go, and Mike has spotted the problem too. So I see this slab, and note the obviously different FS number. OK. Like you, didn't think a change was necessary. But I'll learn.

So, now I just have to look up the number.

Oh, wait a minute. Look it up where?

The much heralded volume 2 of the 4th ed will only cover half dimes on up. We've had the cents CPG book for years, vol. 1 4th ed.

To make sense of this slab, I need volume 1, 5th edition, I guess.

Well, I'm sure some helpful person will let me know that a friend's second cousin on his mom's side told him about it, and when it's coming out, but I can't ask for any more info, because he has a pinkie swear with his confidant not to. And a pinkie swear is stronger than a cross my heart and hope to die.

ROTFL! Yep -- I'm just as confused as you! Hey Bill -- I like your sig quote. For me it's "learning something new here every day -- and getting more confused by the second!"

Cross-references for old CPG numbers to new CPG numbers for shield nickels only can be found here:

    CPG Spreadsheet

Pay no attention to the prices though, they are old.
