Tonight's impulse BIN (Viva Italia!)

Italy 1 Lira, 1863 M BN (KM 5a.1). It's the most common type for the date. Looks like it may have some fairly colorful toning. Krause puts UNC at $50 and BU at $150. This was smack dab in the middle at $99 (although in my mind MS65 falls in the BU category as opposed to UNC).
Either way it looks like a very nice example. I see these fairly frequently in low-to-medium grades, but not often in high grade...

PS: And Krause has them undervalued most of the times, at least judging from the auctions that I see.

Thanks! It hasn't been quite a year yet since I returned to coin collecting and contending with coins on the Bay. I'm finding that I'm doing far more BINning than bidding, especially on slabbed material. It seems that it is a real seller's market and moon money is being paid. If the BIN is anywhere even close to reasonable, I usually BIN rather than risk losing the coin. In this case the opening bid was $50 and the BIN was $99. I was under no illusion that the coin might end up even close to $50 if left to run to completion, and the BIN was not outrageous, so I hit the BIN.
I've had far too many cases over the last 4 months where I've bid rather than BIN, setting my max bid just under the BIN in hopes of possibly getting a better deal, only to watch the snipers fly past the original BIN. If I'm going to set my max bid higher than BIN in order to contend, why not just do the BIN in the first place? Sure there's always the possibility that I might have gotten the coin for less, but I'm seeing that as the exception rather than the rule these days...
This especially seems true of aesthetically appealing no-problem coins in 64 and better.

I think it was a steal
I managed to snag the last one left below for $59, but that pales in comparison to the German proof and the Siberian novodel. AUGH!

Well, your Dominican Republic piece only made me mildly queasy, not actually ill...
On a whim I contacted the seller afterwards to ask if he had any more world coins. He had one slab and 2 raw pieces left. He sent pictures and asking prices and we worked out a deal on all 3. I'll post when I receive them. He seems like a very nice guy, great to work with...

Great catches everybody, why don't they ever sell Greek coins with such ridiculously low BINs?

<< <i>I see a lot of members got some nice coins here, including a good dealer who posted first and was clever enough to check his other items.

What? Huh?! You must have us mistaken for someone else. We're not good dealers....
