Burnished? Can't quite tell...

    Polished and re-toned, I think. Still...a very nice coin.image

Looks to me like it's been cleaned pretty well, and is retoning in a splotchy way. To me it's fugly, and I would look for a piece with a more original, crusty look....

Cleaned and partially retoned. Not attractive.

this is a far more challenging call. Was the coin cleaned? It could have been, but if it were, I am not sure that there would be that distinct wear pattern that is so clearly defined by separation in the color. I think it is a nice coin and I like more than the 1836. I would say VF30

You guys are harsh on 170+ year old coinage. Remember this isn't a hairy head lol

Stripped & retoned. Not hideous, but not my cup of tea either.

I'm more bothered by the big diagonal scratch on the obverse than by the look of the surfaces. Looking to pay high VF money -- you can do better.

It it was cleaned it was long before it left circulation. Otherwise, you would not see the color change on all of the worn high spots.

Since the high spots are white, yet other parts are toned, why do you think it was cleaned? If someone cleaned it, they would have done the high spots and the fields (the low spots might have been hard to reach). If it were chemically cleaned, would not all parts be the same color, either white or toned? How could you clean only the high spots without cleaning the field?

I like it. I think it would look a bit darker in person that what shows up on my monitor.

    Trinketts:

I appreciate the threads and pictures that you have posted as well as the whole concept behind the threads in connection with the Bust Quarters... well done and I really hope more collectors looked at the pictures and read the responses even though they may not have responded.

The 1834, 1835 and 1836 threads you created are really what this forum should be all about and it is time to return to these types of threads instead of what has ended up getting between 100-700 posts. Numismatics should not be confused with tabloid crap.

Thanks.. I really appreciate that image

It's ok to be emotional about numismatics, especially the 170+ year old coins that have been posted. But to call each other names because one group or another likes a certain coin is very childish and does nothing to promote the hobby.
