As far as Saflips are concerned...

...how long can coins be stored in them? Indefinitely?

I asked the head honcho and got no reply, so I'm taking it here.

  • I've been using them for years and have had no problems. They are hard plastic and have no plasticizers which would cause breakdown of the plastic over time, thus eliminating the worry of PVC damage. However, keep in mind that the coins in Saflips should not be handled too often due to the hard plastic. This would cause wear to the coins from sliding around over the long run. Keep them in album pages and there will be no problems.

I have had no problems storing in Saflips over the past 5 years or so.
If you are concerned about the coins toning, you have to consider the box that you will store the Saflips in. Years ago, I stored them in cardboard type boxes and they would cause the silver coins to tone a bit because the flips are not airtight. Lately, I have been storing them in Intercept Shield 2x2 boxes and (so far) have seen no toning.

Saflips are heat sealable and are probably as airtight as slabs.

A long time, if stored right. I use them for the coins that I have for sale - and they can be heat sealed. And, of course, I sell them at a good price. image

The only real problem they may have is that as they age they have a tendency to become brittle an may split along the edges. This can be a problem with larger coins which will tend to fall out of them. I just got a nice Afghanistan piece in the mail, silver dollar size, in a saflip. As I lifted it out of the mailer the flip split and the coin dropped right out. . . . and into the mailer. If it hadn't landed in the mailer it could have dropped to the floor and put a nice rim ding in a very nice ninety year old AU coin.
