Topps Vault First Edition pre-BGS slabbed.... what are these?

I've seen several of these BGS slabbed "Vault First Edition" cards listed on Ebay of late, most of which are from '05 Topps Football, and #'s low, like to /5. What are these? Is this really a real product? ... or is BGS trying something out to make some money? I can't figure it out. Where these really obtained from a pack somewhere? Redemptions? They all appear to have blank backs too... I can't see the value in wanting one of these, but maybe I'm alone in that thought.

So what gives? Are these a real product?
