New Bust Quarter.. Guess grade if you like

Does anyone know of a good solvent to clean NGC slabs, although she is going for a cross... I want to have it clear as possible.. Don't need a 'DNC' because the graders didnt feel like looking under the scuff.

  • Very nice. As for cleaning the slab I would personally just set her free and stick her in an album. But that is just me.image

I was thinking about doing this with my Bust Quarter set and working on a registry Bust Half set...

nice coin and these are graded tough and I seem to like these more than others. I think it is in the 50-53 range

    Outstanding coin. I think it's a B1 marriage.

At first I thought you were wrong about this being B-1, because there is not supposed to be a period after the 50 C. My guess is there is a mark where the period would be, not a period. Must be B-1.

If the coin has luster, PCGS should give it at least AU50. If the luster is present, NGC probably called it AU55. JMHO

    Mozin,
I went through the exact same thought process. Had it narrowed down to B1 and then started wondering if that was a period or a "spot". I ended up checking all the other marriages just to be sure. The "spot" is in the wrong position for it to be a period. If it were a period it should be up a bit higher and a tad farther away from the C. This wasn't the easiest quarter to attribute. Was fun though image

Yes it was a slight spot.. almost in the right place lol... Is this more rare than others?

    John,

The 1834 B1 is just about the most common 1834 Bust Quarter die marriage there is. So no, it's not any more rare than the others. However that doesn't diminish the coin in any way. You've got youself one seriously nice, problem free, eye appealing AU bust quarter...not everyone can say they have that. Your coin is a keeper in every sense of the word.

ps. Sometimes these little buggers get spots in the weirdest places and weirdest shapes. I once had a bust half with a toning spot that looked exactly like a tiny "3"...very odd it was.

I agree this coin is going to stay with me a long time image

BTW... it's graded NGC XF 45...

I want to crack and try for an upgrade but I have had awful luck going NGC-PCGS lately sigh

Like I said earlier, "If the coin has luster...". NGC must not have liked the luster much to only give it XF45. Bust Quarters in XF45 are not that easy to find, at least encapsulated by PCGS/NGC.

I think the lack of any luster on the Obverse is what is keep this from hitting AU... If it had some of the luster from the reverse I think it would make AU... But I have to say this has more detail than any XF I have ever seen.

Edit to add: I can't type today lol

Very nice coin - I would think it would cross no problem regardless of slab scuffiness. However, if you want to polish it up Novus #1 and #2 polish will do the job just fine. On NGC slabs though, keep the scratch remover polish away from the edges - NGC slabs have crevices on the edges the stuff can creep into.
