Have you ever bid...

Have you ever bid with the sole intention of driving the price up, with not intention of winning (I don't mean shilling, I mean with no profit motive)? If so, why?

  • I did a couple times.... This is why. Probably a dumb reason. I get mad at people who I know personally that doesnt snipe an item, they would rather bid a couple different times during an auction when they should know better and just use auctionsniper or something./

That being said, I get ticked and bid the item up myself. If I win it fine, but the actual intention is to prove a point.

I will step up and be honest. I was on Ebay one night, bored I guess, and I saw an Emmitt that I already had. There was about a half hour left on the auction with no bidders. I figured if I win it for $8.00 then that would be cool. I put a bid down. A few minutes later I was outbid. I then put another bid down and a few seconds later I was outbid again. It was the same guy outbidding me each time, there were no other bidders. I bid again and same thing happened. After the third bid I said forget it and just kept bidding for fun. Each time I bid, then whoever it was bid a few seconds later. It was a BGS 1990 Topps Traded Emmitt Smith. I think the card sold for almost $40.00. I felt bad after the fact, because the other guy must have really wanted it and I drove the price up.

I never will do that again image

All the more reason to snipe...

I just bid about 15 minutes ago under the same circumstances---Card was at 30, I'd paid 50 for it a couple weeks ago. Five minutes of "work" later, it was at 50.

I snipe everything now. Unless its one of those auctions that if I win, great but if I lose who cares.

  • I have, when I win an auction from somebody, I always check out the sellers other items to save on shipping. If I see cards that are pretty cheap I will place one or two bids on them because if I get stuck, I don't have to pay any extra shipping.

the best story is that someone did it to me a month ago. i knew he had the card, like a lot of us i keep detailed records of the big set i am chasing. i put in a high snipe of $144 he came over the top and beat me. 30 minutes later i get an email saying OOPS, i already have the card, you can have it at $144 plus shipping. he must have really thought i was an idiot. he got his hand caught in the cookie jar and wanted me to pay my max for it, now he has two and another will come around again.

i made a vow not to do that in 2006. i got stuck about 6 times last year being a pr-ck and bidding on a card that i did not want, just to jack up the price. the other day i did it again and am high bidder. some idiots never learn. i still have a few days so if anyone collects 1977 let me know.

there is also a cat and mouse game i play with the 1966's. the top man has deep pockets but has his registry hidden so i don't know exactly what he has. i try to guess his snipe and snipe just underneath hoping for him to pay max. i usually need the card also, but i hope i don't get stuck. i know he has done it to me and others on cards he has just to "protect his turf".

when you see someone with a double bid or sometimes even more you can easily get away with it. a $45 annual snipe service saves a boatload in money and time.

I've been hit with this. Grr. Oh well. Taught me a lesson.

Several years ago, I wanted 4 of a particular card, and put down rather high bids on them so I wouldn't get outbid. The cards were selling for pretty low, so I figured that even if someone bid me up, they wouldn't go past a certain point. Well, along comes some guy who bid past my max bid. My high bid being revealed, he promptly placed bids just UNDER my max bids on the other 3, running me up to the max. In those days, you could get click on a username and get their email address. He sent me an email saying something to the effect of "Hey, thanks for making me have to pay $xx for the card. Hope you enjoy doing the same on the other 3."

After that, I started sniping old-school style: sit at the computer and keep clicking on "Refresh" over and over again as time tickes down, with another browser window open with my bid ammount ready to go.

I love the snipe services they have now. image Except for when they don't work. image

This is the way I still snipe, with my fiber optic internet hook up I can usually get to within 1 or 2 seconds of auction end, and it's free !

    No.

Plus, one has the potential of getting stung and own something they didn't really want.

Now, I have competed with a guy for an item I wanted, knowing that if I lose, he doesn't get a steal either? Does that count?
