Have you ever bid...

Have you ever bid with the sole intention of driving the price up, with not intention of winning (I don't mean shilling, I mean with no profit motive)? If so, why?
Looking for Jonny Gomes cards, especially Triple Threads and printing plates. Will consider all cards, though. Got something? Contact me at c_u_l_1@yahoo.com

That being said, I get ticked and bid the item up myself. If I win it fine, but the actual intention is to prove a point.
I never will do that again

I just bid about 15 minutes ago under the same circumstances---Card was at 30, I'd paid 50 for it a couple weeks ago. Five minutes of "work" later, it was at 50.

i made a vow not to do that in 2006. i got stuck about 6 times last year being a pr-ck and bidding on a card that i did not want, just to jack up the price. the other day i did it again and am high bidder. some idiots never learn. i still have a few days so if anyone collects 1977 let me know.
there is also a cat and mouse game i play with the 1966's. the top man has deep pockets but has his registry hidden so i don't know exactly what he has. i try to guess his snipe and snipe just underneath hoping for him to pay max. i usually need the card also, but i hope i don't get stuck. i know he has done it to me and others on cards he has just to "protect his turf".
when you see someone with a double bid or sometimes even more you can easily get away with it. a $45 annual snipe service saves a boatload in money and time.
Several years ago, I wanted 4 of a particular card, and put down rather high bids on them so I wouldn't get outbid. The cards were selling for pretty low, so I figured that even if someone bid me up, they wouldn't go past a certain point. Well, along comes some guy who bid past my max bid. My high bid being revealed, he promptly placed bids just UNDER my max bids on the other 3, running me up to the max. In those days, you could get click on a username and get their email address. He sent me an email saying something to the effect of "Hey, thanks for making me have to pay $xx for the card. Hope you enjoy doing the same on the other 3."
After that, I started sniping old-school style: sit at the computer and keep clicking on "Refresh" over and over again as time tickes down, with another browser window open with my bid ammount ready to go.
I love the snipe services they have now. Except for when they don't work.

This is the way I still snipe, with my fiber optic internet hook up I can usually get to within 1 or 2 seconds of auction end, and it's free !

Pretty much do the exact same thing Banker..
Did your card make it to you banker that I sent (I believe it was the Jordan card?)
Plus, one has the potential of getting stung and own something they didn't really want.
Now, I have competed with a guy for an item I wanted, knowing that if I lose, he doesn't get a steal either? Does that count?
