Update -- Received: 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (GSA) PL Morgan Dollar -- New Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
I purchased this 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (GSA) PL Morgan Dollar last night at auction. As these keep getting more popular with collectors, it's getting more difficult to find the right coin at the right price.

I like the fact that this one also has the GSA designation. Here are the seller's original photos:

Mozeppa: Thanks for the kind words in your post about my new 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (GSA) PL Morgan Dollar.

I am curious to see when I receive this recently graded Morgan, how the current PCGS MS-64 PL grading standards compare with those of some of my more vintaged certified CC Morgans.

If that bruise on her ear is real I would find it bothersome, otherwise its a nice score.

Nice coin. The price wasnt bad either. I just picked up an 1883-CC PSGS MS64 GSA myself. Mine is not a PL and I paid almost what you did. You are lucky I wasnt online last night. I would have snatched that one out from under ya.

Baj: Does the left photo (below) taken from a different angle, without the reflection above Miss Liberty's ear (right photo below), alleviate your concern about the "bruise on her ear" that you mentioned in your post?

  • Looks good Stuart- but I would have to see in hand- as Baj said how is that 'bruise' going to affect its look, the second pic shows a white dot that looks to be from a light source- and could be blotting out the bruise.

that is a eye ball call- not a pic call.

Wade: I think that Baj was referring to the dark area over Liberty's ear in the right photo (2 posts prior to this), which I had originally posted, and not the white bright dot in the left photo, which I have also enlarged for you below.

The ear area appears OK to me in this photo, especially for the price that I paid: 1884-CC Auction Listing - Additional Photos

Good price, I paid almost that much for MS64 no PL. The photos are so-so. I have to defer to PCGS and hope that the photos are subpar.

Joe: I actually purchased this coin at aution on Wednesday night, not Thursday night. I don't know if you were online Wednesday night, however I am glad that we were not bidding against one another for her. image

Steve and Mark: Thanks very much for your posts regarding my new 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (GSA) PL Morgan Dollar. I think that this is one of those cases where the coin may look better than the original seller's photos.

I received this coin today, and took these photos this evening to compare with the original auction photos. Although the mirrored fields are not reflective in the photo, they are very deeply PL, and nearly DMPL in reflectivity. I like the slightly frosty halo around the eagle on the reverse.

This is a truly beautiful coin in person! image

  • Yep- saw this one this afternoon- and there was no beam of 'scottie' light shining on it.

It looks better in hand than in photo.

now check it for the 4A vam...

I saw it too. Liberty did not have the bruise above her eye until Stu dropped kicked her in the yard.

It's a nice above average 64 pl. We tried to talk Stu into including it in the auction he was having but no such luck.

I wasn't gonna mention the drop kick- cuz if he does put it for auction - we can still cut him at .05 on the dollar- We know why he kicked it.

now the eagle has grass stains on its knees.

    BTW- nice kick Stuart.!!

Wade: I checked this new 1884-CC PCGS MS-64 (GSA) PL Morgan Dollar for VAM varieties with my bino-scope, and found that it appears to have a repunched 1 and 8 in the date, as well as strongly doubled "in God We Trust" motto on the reverse.

MAD4MORGANS: Thanks for your post on this thread and your suggestion to check my new 1884-CC Morgan for the newly discovered VAM-4a "Pinned Wing".

I did check this coin for the VAM-4A "Pinned Wing", and did not find it on this example. However, I 've got additional 1884-CC's in my Morgan Dollar collection which I'd also eventually like to examine for this and other interesting VAM varieties.

However, I was very pleased to find that it does possess the Repunched 1 and 8 in the date, as well as Strongly Doubled "In God We Trust" motto on the reverse.

    Nice Coin Stuart!

I saw this thread so I took a look at the 84 CC I have in an GSA graded MS 63* and low and behold I found the Pinned Wing variety!

Here is a pic of the gouge:

Anybody know if this adds any value to the coin yet?

I also like the fact that it's got the PCGS GSA designation, so that I know the coin's provenance and that it has not been dipped or conserved like many Morgan Dollars.
